Best place to get tailored clothing

Where do you think the best city/country is to get tailored clothes, jackets, suits, shirts etc and why?

I've heard Shinzhen is the new Bangkok for this type of gear?

I had a good run in KL last year, works best if you take your favourite suite from Savile Row and have them copy it.

The problem you find without anything to copy except a picture is that it all comes out the same drab cut.

I've had my only tailor suits made in Beijing. They were outstanding too. also had several shirts made as well.

Since 2006 I have had all of my shirts, pants, suits and jackets made b y Lee Baron in Hong Kong - excellent materials which only make it to Australia 6 months later, the cut and the sewing are first class.

I am still wearing shirts that Peter Lee made a couple of years back - the material is that good, with just an occasional button needing re-afixing. The price for the quality is excellent - and tailor made clothing for a lot less than off-the-rack things here in Oz. Suits are all super fine merino; shirts cotton, and some of the pants/jackets have been Italian linen etc.

BTW - the hand-made shoes I have done by Mr Zee (a couple of chops along) are magnificent - and some good repairers back here recognize them - shoes bought in 2006 still being worn and as smart now as they were then!

Bangkok is the new Bangkok with the exchange rate as it is. 5 shirts for USD 65. Hard to beat. Just make sure they make the sleeves wide enough - they are not good at biceps.

In HK it's either Lords (Pedder building) or of course Sams (TST) - most famous bespoke tailor in the world. Ask to see his photo album - amazing the people that have been to Sams. I always get my suits at Sams but will shop around for trousers and shirts

Saville Row's Henry Poole have their tailors training the Shanghaiese tailors over at Ningbo, just outside Shanghai. And if I am not mistaken, they have open up shop there too.

+1, would highly recommend going to Lee Baron. Prices tend to be a little higher than you might find elsewhere, but the quality of the fabric and cut is second to none.

I have used Bobby's in Hong Kong several times and would now never go anywhere else. Their work is incredible and it works out significantly cheaper than buying a suit off the rack in Aus.

I went to RS Fashions in Hong Kong when I was there. Ended up with a very nice suit for AU$350.

So far I've read mixed reactions from those getting suits in HKG (even at Sams).

I havn't read or seen any bad reviews on Thailand tailors, even though the quality may not be at bespoke level?

My own experience is very positive from coughet, however I'll be travelling alone to go shopping and coughet aint too fun alone!

Mrs RB had (horse) riding jackets made there & was rapt in them. Other ladies tops & mens shirts were fine & I am still using travel pants (with zipoffs) that I had made with pockets & zips specifically as I wanted them.

Hmm - I am up in BKK next month but only for three days so I am not sure if it is worth even trying to get shirts made. I arrive late Tuesday night, Wednesday is a public holiday and depart 2 PM on Friday - so I don't think I have enough time - any thoughts?

I had some shirts made in Hoi An. It was Lunar New Year's Day (chinese new year except it was not china). Perfect fit and made in less than six hours. Most impressed!

Also had a suit made in coughet in 2006 and still wearing it; great value and would do it again.

You could have enough time Simon.

I was in BKK in November and could have had it done in 2 days. I had a good Thai business colleague recommended a tailor, and I was very impressed by the quality!

The tailor shop is called Needle King located on the Sukhumvit Rd between Sukhumvit Soi (Alley) 10- Sukhumvit Soi (Alley) 12.

The owner name is Mr. Roger. This is his English name. The shop telephone number is (66 2) 252 9036. Maybe call them in advance and see if they are open on the public holiday.

The shop is usually open around 12 pm until 8 pm. Just let Mr. Roger know that I recommended you visit him (Ben from Australia – Friend of Amit) and he will look after you. Watch out though, he is an excellent salesman, so you’ll get great clothes, but maybe one more pair of pants than you expected!

Know people getting Armani copy skirts in Hoi An for $100.Mrsdrron got an original at their outlet in Vermont for $US90.We didn't see the value.
I have Brooks Bros shirts for $30,Polo sports jacket for $90 all from the US.I no longer see value in Asia.
However will be in the market for a dinner jacket in BKK the next visit as mrsdrron insists I need a pink one!Unfortunately the only 1 I saw in LOFTAP last time was a size too small-it was a Valentino for $230.Might try Tom's-similiar reccomendations from Thai regulars on FT.

That's plenty of time. They'll make one first for a fitting and then the rest. Typically you can have the test fitting same day if you go in the morning. For shirts I'd recommend Rajawongse or Raja's in Sukhumvit. Usually about 1000 baht ($30) for Egyptian cotton.

I have had tailoring done in two different locations in Shenzhen. Also in BKK, one great experience, one ordinary. Earlier this year I had a Collette Dinnigan style dress made in Shenzhen for approx AUD$80 including fabric and labour, plus 2 jackets. Only had one lot of measurements taken and paid for the items to be sent by DHL to Australia. Took about 3 weeks to arrive but couldn't be happier with the clothes. The fabrics in the fabric market in Shenzhen are incredible.
