Hi

Just trying to piece together a trip to the USA next year and thinking of using points to redeem one way LAX to SYD, but then realised when I try and buy one way via qantas or VA or AirNZ, that it's almost the same as buying a return fare, esp in economy. So where is the best place to find oneway SYD to LAx tix?

Thanks!

You'd either be better off using points from Australia to the US then look at purchasing a one way ticket USA to Australia.

Price one way fares LAX/SYD & also LAX/SYD/LAX - if it's not that much more to buy a return fare ex USA then book the return sector SYD/LAX for the date you want to depart Oz on your next trip to the USA. To get back to Australia from your second trip to the US, either get a one way frequent flyer redemption ticket on points LAX/SYD or just keep buying return tickets ex the USA.

It's not so much as looking for the best sites for one way tickets but when looking on websites change your country from Australia to the USA so all fares displayed will be local fares for sale ex USA.

I was looking at doing a JASA SYD/LAX & when I priced fares ex USA on CX JFK/HKG/BNE/HKG/JFK the fare was USD1598.00 return plus taxes valid for 6 months so if your departure date JFK/HKG was 01Sep, your last sector on that ticket HKG/JFK has to be flown by 01Mar. The CX fare ex Aust was double that!

Jetstar who fly on the HNL leg do one ways, then pair with an HNL-LAX return or KUP/YUP

One-way fares to/from Australia are always a problem when using points one-way. One solution, when it's available, is to buy AA miles when they have the 25% bonus offer. This buys you a trip back from USA to Australia for about $US850 (Buy 30,000 miles=37,500 including bonus) and it's the same number of miles from anywhere in the USA. There's also the possibility of coupling an award JFK-HNL (same miles as internal US flight) with a cheap flight back from HNL (Strategic?). Unfortunately it means planning ahead and taking the risk that award seats will be available.

You won't find a one way at half the price of the cheapest return... if that was what you were hoping for... Sorry. :(

Air Pacific (FJ) "usually" has one ways via NAN in the 700-800-ish range... I often buy from NZ at AUD $1000-1100 for that route... where a return would have been 1700-ish... (but NZ is "my" FF program so there are other benefits...)

I would buy the return for the start of the next trip as ozbeachbabe suggests... but my travel to the US is usually via Asia for other reasons...

I managed to get my son a one way award PER-SYD-LAX-AUS in early-ish December.
He was completely confused as to why the QF one way flight (SFO/LAX-SYD-PER) in early Jan was so much
more expensive than CX (SFO-HKG-PER). And that's with the higher CX fare class to get the ability to
credit to his AA account.

The CX exUSA one way fare works out to approximately half the exPER round trip.
So quite reasonable except for the current CX Y seat.

Happy wandering

Fred

Another option is the current US Airways Dividend Miles promotion (buy 50,000 miles and get 50,000 miles bonus) but need to be a member for at least 12 days before being able to buy miles by which time the promotion would be over.
