I'm a fan of the Westpac Earth Gold. Points earning is fairly good and insurance is one of the better credit card ones.
Only issue is Annual Fee is $125 (although I've always had it waived) and technically you need to make $50k to get it. Although I know plenty of people earning what you do who got approved.

It'd depend Dave. If a postgrad student that income is likely to be a tax free scholarship. I know as a postgrad student not on a scholarship but earning about that much money, I managed to get enough points for a couple of flights with the base ANZ FF visa.I would have thought that with an income of around 35k , that the value of rewards would likely be more than offset by the cost of the card and that a no /low fee card with no rewards would likely be better value
