Why not both? Occasionally I'll have a glass of Riesling to start the night, have a couple of beers with Entree and then onto a glass or two of red with dinner. Depends on the beer though. I could easily match a deep red rye ale with a steak.

I don't understand why any alcohol needs to be paired with food?

When I am thirsty I find any beer goes well with food.

Beer with Indian, or other very spicy cuisines.
Wine with French. Anything in between I would tend to favour wine but could make occasional exceptions.
No way I would consider beer with desert - yuk!

Beer before a meal, anything but beer after.

Who cares what "experts" say.The best thing to drink with any food is the one you prefer. No body else's opinion matters.
