We are taking the opportunity to spend the Melbourne Cup long weekend in NZ. Have booked direct flights Melbourne to Auckland (depart Fri 28 Oct return Tues 1 Nov so 4 nights) with Emirates. Thinking of spending the Fri night in Auckland and hiring a car the Sat morning & driving to the Bay of Islands. Does anyone have any tips on where to stay? We have friends travelling with us so accommodation for 4 adults x 3 nights.
Would appreciate any tips from the group.
Many thanks,
Fiona. :)

Having stayed in the Bay Of Islands area, yearly over the past 5 years the only place to stay at is Cliff Edge Lodge in Opua...Best view by far ( stunning actually ) with Peter Meir a great host....Loads to do and see with a fabulous walk from Opua along the coast to Pahia

Bay of Islands is a great place. I've stayed in Russell a few times at the Duke of Marlborough, lovely old style hotel very central to everything. Some excellent food there and also down the road at Gables.

Depending on how far the budget stretches, there are some amazing properties such as Eagles Nest. Never stayed but the photos are stunning.

Have stayed at the Duke and agree that it's nice and so is Russell but you always need to use the ferry to go anywhere not that it takes long but I still believe that the views from Cliff Edge are breathtaking image.jpg

We spent a few nights in the Bay of Islands in February. Paihia is a great spot to stay as it's easy to travel to other areas such as Russell, Kerikeri and Waitangi.

Don't really have an accommodation suggesting as where we stayed was nice but was just a hotel room.

Have only stayed at Anchorage Motel (a couple of times) and on the first floor there is a reasonable view of the sea. It's a very nice property for a motel, but there is plenty of choice in and around Paihia and I'm sure you could go more upmarket if desired.

What the gentleman didn't say was that there was a major outing by a group from Flyertalk to the bay area in 2015.
A good time was had by all who were at the time wandering

Stayed at the Fantail Mill in April this year, halfway between Russell and the ferry. Only 4 units, hosts very welcoming and not that expensive.

We've stayed at the Copthorne over NY. It's in a nice spot, a little away from the main centre in Paihia. It's a peaceful place to stay just inside the national park.

Russell Cottages - 5 Star Apartments in Russell, New Zealand

We stayed here earlier in the year.
The ferry you just need to drive there, it's only 3 mins ferry ride or so to get to mainland and goes back and forth lots!!! Stay in the car so it's easy.

The cottages are a 2 minute walk to the main drag.
Full kitchen which is great for bringing down costs and you can share accommodation with your friends. Pool. Living room area etc.
There is another place right on the front that starts with H which is simple and clean.

Theres a place that does pizza with a great view (can't recall the name!) and you should do a boat tour around the islands, stop for lunch. Take your togs and walking shoes, camera for dolphins etc. Duke of Marlborough is good for drinks. You may need to book for dinner as it can get busy.

Waitangi is great to visit for a piece of history.

Kerikeri is a lot further away so I wouldn't stay there.
Paihia is the other alternative. I've only stayed in basic accommodation here but not sure where I would choose now.

If you only have 3 nights, I'd suggest heading to Waiheke Island from Auckland instead!
