For O/S transactions because it's fee-free and I don't spend enough for the points to outweigh the annual fee. I'd have to spend about $20k p.a. to make it worth the fee of $150.

Insurance on the BW card is pretty decent, especially if upgraded to world. Better than my qantas amex at least. That's why I plan to keep mine.

Oh also the interest free days are worth taking into account in a direct comparison to 28 degrees. If you're pushing a lot of forex but could have those $ offsetting a mortgage of 5%, you could still end out on top (especially once factoring in points).

Don't forget that you could revert to bankwest Zero Platinum which is imho superior to 28 deg

I can vouch it's FX fee free, partner uses the card everytime we are overseas (like right now, in NZ).

I've finally got around to applying for it.

The application process doesn't allow you to choose card/bonus type. It allocates one based on your financial status. Apparently, my status is too poor for even the base card with a 1k limit! Perhaps one to many applications this year.

I had this happen to me when I applied for BW Platinum back in 2013. They'd only offer me a credit limit just shy of the minimum limit for Gold owing to no banking history with them and having just started a new job. They've since upped the credit limit to a figure higher than $6k; which is the lower limit for Platinum cards. I might call them and ask to be moved across to the Platinum product with bonus points. See what they have to say. $160 for 50k Qants Points is a win. As is a Visa/MC CC that earns more than 0.5 points. No forex fees is obviously a bonus (as I currently use my Citibank Plus for that, which earns no points!)

Might try get me outta here 's approach and chat to them online to try and reduce any hits on my credit file (which, incidentally as of this morning, tells me there isn't enough credit activity on my file to calculate a score.

I was approved the Bankwest Qantas Mastercard (working in not for profit and all that; nevertheless, the credit limit's rather high). It was mailed out to me on Monday, so I'm waiting for it to arrive so I can book my flights to Europe.

Would you recommend getting insurance? I have it with my 28 Degrees card, so I thought it might be useful.

What insurance do you need and what level card did bankwest grant you?

It's a Bankwest Qantas Mastercard – the basic one. Gold and Platinum come with Credit Card Protection, which is what I actually meant by 'insurance' (pardon my phrasing–I wrote the comment on the go).

Ah ok. No problems. I don't rate credit card protection as I feel it duplicates income protection insurance which I hold elsewhere.

Makes sense. I guess it would be a good idea to take it then, as I don't have income protection. I pay my stuff as soon as I put it on the card anyway, so I wouldn't be hit by any fees anyway.

Please don't take just my advice - google the pros and cons or consult an expert before making a call - but if you don't plan on buying more on the card than you would pay off each month, some could deem it to be an unnecessary insurance

Thanks for the advice. As far as I understand, it doesn't cost me anything unless it takes me a while to pay it off. It also covers me for lost or stolen cards, issues when I'm overseas etc, which is what I'd like to be covered for. I'll look into it a bit closer as it's proven useful with my 28 Degrees card. Thanks again.

Got email saying card ordered on 25 April, still waiting. Got the PIN a few days ago, though...

Interesting that I have received my online login details and I can see the credit card account there but no credit card yet. Hoping it will arrive soon.

My credit rating is below average now and I have always paid my balance on time and never had a default. Not sure what is going on there and I have requested for a credit report from Veda.

Any ideas about improving your credit rating?

It's applying that hurts your score, which is somewhat silly. It's effectively a negative to apply for credit and then a positive if you don't have bad credit situations reported to the agencies; but no inbetween. So you and I who have savings, pay everything on time in full are considered the same (from a Veda score perspective) as someone who doesn't have any savings and pays bills a few days late or set up a payment arrangement because that kind of activity isn't bad enough to report to the rating agencies...

(well, at least that's my understanding)

I got approved pending documentation on 14 April and sent my payslips the same day. I was contacted on Wednesday regarding an anomaly which was resolved that day and I got the welcome email / sms today saying I'm approved for $8k which I'm happy with give I have about $60k in card limits waiting on various points to clear. The card is due to arrive within 10 days. I'll use this as my go to O/S card for 11 months before reverting to 28 degrees.

Mine arrived today. The card can be activated and PIN set online which was very handy.
