Banana served as 'Gluten Free' meal

It's a really misleading headline. He was served a full dinner after takeoff, and a banana for breakfast. The banana isn't the only food he got offered for the 9 hours.

Agreed, it's still pretty funny from the outside..... but I would not be impressed if that was served to me as the special breakfast option.

Man given single banana on nine-hour All Nippon Airways flight after ordering gluten-free meal

This cracked me up.

What's the worst "special meal" you've ever received? As a lactose intolerant, i find the lactose free meals are usually okay.... I just hate when the gluten free meal is the replacement for lactose free as well. 2 birds one stone... :(

Pretty funny, but I understand how shocking it must have been for him. I remember getting a banana but it was for the refreshment service.

I've also experienced another passenger taking my meal. as As there were no more gluten free meal the flight attendants scrounged up some leftover cheese and salad from J.

On some flights the gluten free meal tends to be lactose free. No yogurt, no ice cream!

I suspect there was some mix up here and that the banana was actually designated for some other type of service - either as a snack, or after the main meal. It would be unusual for an airline to load a single piece of fruit all by itself with a sticker... but they might have put a sticker on a piece of fruit as part of a larger supply to keep it 'reserved' for the gluten free pax.

I'm thinking there's probably an uneaten gluten meal somewhere which the crew couldn't find at the time.

ANA catering isn't exactly wonderful.... partner and I flew SYD-HND-SYD in J and he has a seafood allergy. Being a Japanese airline, we thought we should try to address this (usually don't bother) and tried for a "no seafood" option, but that didn't exist so it ended up as vegetarian. To say it was "cough" would be an understatement.

I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian, and I get very annoyed when I order a lacto-ovo meal but it's just the same as the vegan option, because I actually love my eggs and dairy based foods

Unfortunately some airlines are catering to the lowest common denominator in any given category... this can mean 'vegan' for all variants of western 'vegetarian'. Cuts costs for the airlines.
