Does anyone know of an annual travel insurance policy that covers the lost/damaged baggage, delays and cancellation etc and medical cover en-route but not the medical cover at the destination?

To put it simply, I'd like to get a policy that covers all the 'normal' components of travel insurance MINUS the medical cover at the destination (because I'll have a separate expat medical insurance policy).

A single trip policy is not a very good option for me because I don't know how long each trip will be, invariably resulting in either overpayment or having to get it extended at a greater costs. Most annual policies are also not a good option because my trips are likely to exceed 60/90 days that are usually on offer, resulting in needing a top-up/extension at a higher cost. What I would like to get is a flexible annual policy that can accommodate longer trips, I guess.

If you know of any company that offers a somewhat weird policy like this, please let me know.

I've been in the industry for years and ive never seen a product that fits your requirements, i think you might be out of luck.

Thanks very much Travel Guru. I think I'll just have to take the whole 'package' then.

Since you replied, may I impose upon you and ask if you've seen an annual policy that covers longer trips than the standard 60 or 90 days each, and if so, with whom? (If needed, please PM.)

You may be able to get an unbundled policy directly through an insurance company or maybe through an insurance broker.

I am in 100% the same situation, work overseas in exactly the same way.
I have found nothing myself, but my company more or less self insures me shall we say. They have a medical policy and they also have a general travel insurance policy but i suspect that any delayed bags etc i have been told just buy what you need an expense it, we will consider a claim if its possible and if its worth it otherwise the company just pays.

If you find anything i would love to know.

I also use my CC a lot that could in thoery provide some cover but just depends on the details of each trip i take.

Thanks Oz_Mark, I'll try a couple of brokers and see what they can come up with.

Evan, you sound like you've got yourself pretty much covered. But how about private side trips in terms of loss of baggage etc? Does your work cover it? This is what worries me more than flight cancellations as I'm not covered for baggage under any policy except the statutory cover.

I haven't been in one country long enough to take out a travel insurance from whichever country I'm present in, which removes the option of taking out a locally-based travel insurance.

If you find something, let me know, and I shall do likewise.

My company medical policy will cover me for side trips....

I can only use my credit card in case of other things... its a risk but i have not been to worried since most of my travel for pleasure is on cheap fares and it would not be the end of the world i guess.

I'm also interested in this - am looking for longer trips (leisure, not business).

Have found only 1cover to be 90days (found Columbus Direct, Toursafe, QBE and YHA to be 60 days).

Any other recommendations for other policies that cover 90days?

thanks :)

Interestingly, most passengers already have a level of inbuilt cover for Baggage Delays/Loss. The only issue is in making a timely claim.

The level varies depending upon the "treaty" that applies, whether it's Warsaw or Montreal.

In regard to compensation limits for lost luggage, Montreal is more generous (~$1750) and while all flights within and many to/from Oz are currently under Warsaw (~$30 per Kg), this is soon to change:

Now, in regard to actually making such claims successfully, that's another matter. Maybe a good idea for an AFF KB (Knowledge Base ;))

Might be worth checking what your expat policy before taking out additional insurance. I am currently employed under an expat policy which covers me for lost bags, cancellation costs, missed connections etc. It applies to all business travel and up to 6 weeks leisure travel as well. Having to pay $0 premium pretty handy as well :D
