From the news a few months ago regarding baggage limit changes, QF has finally put prices on their website for people with more than one bag, and heavy bags:

To Pre-purchase the baggage:
Australian Domestic (for travel on/after 1 June 2011)$15 for first piece, $30 for second piece

Airport excess baggage rates DOMESTIC:
1st pce extra luggage - $30
2nd pce and every one after - $60 each
Anything over 23kgs - $20 heavy charge^

Airport excess baggage rates INTERNATIONAL (asia and EU):
Every additional pce - $150
Anything over 23kgs - $50 heavy charge^

http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/prepaid-additional-baggage/global/en
^ Not applicable for Silver, Gold, and Platinum Frequent Flyers, Qantas Club members and customers travelling in Business
~ Not applicable for Business and First customers

Now i can see alot of you not liking this change etc etc, but if you do the calcluations it is alot cheaper for people now if they do have lots of additional baggage. (i'm refering to NB and non FF'ers)
Originaly:
-$10 per Kg over 23kgs for domestic
-$35 per Kg over 23kgs for Asian flights
-$50 per Kg over 23kgs for EU flights

If there is already a thread directly related to this, please delete! Also excuse my speeeling for the title!

I can finally see the advantage of this system, though still think they’re short changing the first couple levels of status… but $15/$30 for an extra piece isn’t bad… although the charge for heavy items doesn’t look very friendly!

Think of it if the bag is 30kgs, instead of paying $70 excess, it would only be $20.

For the the higher tier members thay can have the higher luggage allowance according to the site.

As I read it, as a Gold FF to anywhere (international) but the Americas, I’m given an allowance of 32kg in economy/premium economy per, but then I would be charged $50 for every piece over 23kg, if I’m not travelling business or first? That seems a little mean, giving me an extra allowance but then charging me extra to use it?

Or have I read that wrong?

Maybe you have read it wrong.

When ticketed by weight, it is $35 per kilo over allowance to Asia, and $50 per kilo over allowance to Europe

When ticketed by piece, you get the $50 per heavy piece.

Note that the extra for a heavy piece only applied when you are using the piece system.

The prices QFCSA quoted are for piece system. If going to Asia you are more likely to be on the weight system

Read it wrong i think.

Because when you look at luggage allowances within the FF program:
Fly - Baggage - Checked Baggage

It states;

From 1 December 2010 for travel from 1 June 2011
QP Members -
32kg (70lb) in Economy/Premium Economy
42kg (92lb) in Business
50kg (110lb) in First

Silver/Gold Members -
32kg (70lb) in Economy/Premium Economy
64kg (140lb) in Business
64kg (140lb) in First

WP Members -
64kg (140lb) regardless of travel class

Maybe RedRoo can make a comment on this. Obviously not 'commercial in confidence' anymore as published on website. :o

Doesn't the ^ footnote say that the heavy charge doesn't apply to PS, QP, SG and WP. So if it was within your allowance and you had status then no $50 charge.

Well for domestic flights the caret^ says the charge doesn’t apply for those members, but on international flights the tilde~ only makes note of business and first passengers, which is what got me.

I only read the OP, which has the ^ against both domestic and international.

Now reading the linked page I see the following at the top:

If you wish to travel with more than the checked baggage allowance (and you are not travelling from Japan), you can pre-purchase an Additional Baggage Allowance before you go, at lower rates than Airport Excess Baggage charges.

So you should get your gold allowance and only be charged if you have extra in addition to the allowance.

Just fly JAL J class instead ... they allow 4 bags at 32kg each if you're Sapphire or above ;)

And despite measuring one of our pieces of luggage which was about 8 inches over the maximum, still put it through at no charge on both flights.

I'm very happy with the new system - will save me a few thousand per year.

I was interested in this part of the story-
A Qantas spokeswoman said there would be some flexibility in the system but would not reveal what kind of error factor it would allow.
This doesn't fit what I have heard. There were pax on our recent cruise from Perth who had to use the new system on QF.Their bag was 23.1kg and was rejected as too heavy holding up everyone whilst they tried to comprehend what was happening.

From what those passengers have said is incorrect then. The system gives an allowance of 23.9kgs before charging excess baggage. If your bag is 23.9kg, it will round DOWN to the nearest kilo. If 25.8, the baggage will be charged at 25kgs and so on.

I wish my bathroom scales rounded down

Moral of the story - if you are being charge a heavy fee for being over 23kg, may as well go the whole hog to 32kg :)

Re: Baggage changes

I cant for the life of me work out what bags we can take any more!

Travel to MEL (domestic) after the arrival of minidoc (arrival soon, travel in March/April).

Both mrsdoc and myself are QFF Gold.

So we get travelling in Y:
? 32kg each (is this right)?

- provided the 32kg is in a single bag (each) and not say two bags each @ eg. 17+15kg.
- checked allowance for minidoc (? just the stroller carried FOC?) The stroller will be packed in it's own (purpose-designed) bag for protection, but I presume this isnt an issue?
- onboard allowance (unchanged from previous)
- is there an additional onboard allowance for minidoc

On the way home we're on a JASA but is the allowance the same, or more because in J?

I must say, I have no problem with the weight allowance (QF can set what they like), but the pieces limit (ie. one each) really rankles as i'll now be hauling 2x32kg rather than 2x20kg + 2x10kg. My back aches already......
