back pack on plane

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this question. I had already decided not to use my cabin bag on my o/seas trip to Rome next week prior the scare in England in August. I'm trying to learn to pack smarter and not take the 'kitchen sink' as per usual.
My question is my back pack is not a hugh pack as used by backpackers, just a standard size. Can I use this in lieu of cabin bag, much smaller and logic tells me this is ok. Just checking as I have this memory of seeing people having to rebag bags at airport check ins and I don't want to be one.

I tend to travel with one of three things onboard:

1. A backpack which contains very little.
2. A "Targus" laptop backpack which contains my laptop
3. Nothing. Just travel with no carry-on.

Unless it weighs over the limit, contains liquids (UK/US) or exceeds the UK limits for cabin baggage size, I can't see it being a drama.

A smallish backpack also has the benefit of being able to fit into most fairly packed overhead lockers

Just do yourself and other PAX a favour and carry it, don't wear it on board. Several times I've been seated in my aisle seat and have been clobbered on the head by someone wearing a backpack who turned around on the spot forgetting their side-on profile has an additional 20-30 cm protruding from the back. :evil:

I usually travel with a small carry-on backpack too unless I have just come back from a trip and done lots of shopping. Just be aware, in addition to the maesurements, some airlines will also weigh it. In the past, I have gotten around this by wearing 3 (yes 3) pairs of jeans and several tops on the plane, then stripping off the 2 extra ones into the backpack. The US isn't so worried about weight as they are about size and no liquids. Australian airports will usually weigh your carry ons with your checkins.

There is some debate that they will only weigh it if it looks heavy. So throw it around like it's empty and you should have no problems.

I am glad you can this as I have great difficulty wearing one pair of jeans.

Women's jeans are often made of a stretch denim so we have some leeway. I forgot to mention the ruffled gypsy skirt I had on top, it would have been too bulky to pack. I looked like a bag lady, but I figured a small sacrifice when clothes are so much cheaper in the US than in Australia!

LMAO at the 150 T-shirts! That would be extreme, even for me! I have worn 3 or 4 tops, not T-shirts but fancier designer tops and a jacket. In the past we have flown NZ to the States and they are very fussy about carry on weights. Several years ago when we were living in the Cook Islands and made a visit to NZ, we did heaps of shopping because clothing variety is very limited and expensive on the islands. I made my husband wear 7 shirts and 3 pr of pants on the plane because we had used up our 20kgs each with shoes and other stuff.

Just as well you didn't make him wear 3 pairs of shoes on the flight because that would have been very uncomfortable.

You only start to worry if he continues to wear bras after the trip is over! :mrgreen:
