Strike dates announced on BA 29-31 January, 5-7 February, 12-14 February

A strike by BA cabin crew should only affect BA operated flights (and the codeshares). However does anyone have a view on how QF would be affected by, say, a strike by check-in staff or baggage handlers? Much of their ground handling at LHR T4 must be executed by BA staff.

I am not sure of QF's ground handling arrangements but unless there are illegal sympathy strikes should not be directly impacted (it is BA cabin crew only not ground crew).

However I'd expect lots of flow on impacts. Many pax rebooked on other airlines. Delays in flights due to connecting pax not having as smooth transfers. Etc.

I see on the BA website that if a flight is cancelled, one of the options is a refund.

In my case, I am mid way through a round the world ticket.

Is it possible to get a refund for a single sector? If so, any ideas on how this would be calculated?

I think the quote from this article Wake-up call to Qantas unions | Aviation | The Australian (regarding Qantas and unionism) is very telling:

Kell Ryan, the co-founder of Irish-based discount airline Ryanair, said yesterday unionised workers at airlines such as Qantas and British Airways needed "to wake up" or risk the airline going out of business.

... airlines would go out of business if they continued to battle militant unions. He said there was no future for the style of unionised airline run by Qantas and BA "because change is happening all around them".

Unions serve their purpose. However, they really need to wake up and smell the environment around them. The cushiness that once existed, doesn't really exist any more...

(oh and yes I realised how biased a co-founder of RyanAir would be... but I think it is very telling!)

No, you won't get a refund for a single sector of an ATW ticket. And if you used some other means to get to the next destination then your ATW ticket is invalid since all coupons must be used and be used in the order issued.

If the flight is cancelled you need to take whatever options BA finds to get you to your next destination. Otherwise you had better check that your travel insurance covers industrial action (many do not).

Not happy :!:

Travelling BA, HKG - LHR - EDI on Feb 6th. Middle day of one of the three day strike events.

It' wasn't just the unions in Oz; Up until a decade ago, Oz two airlines and their staff fed of a bottomless tough known as "the two airline system".

This ensured plenty to go around; owners, management, staff, contractor etc. (from Pilots to cleaners) all doing very well.

e.g. In 1985, the cheapest MEL-SYD return was a called something like a "Super Apex" fare and was AUD208. Sales as we know them today were extremely rare so that was as discounted as it gets.

And i lived in country NSW served by Ansett with $700-900 fares when now the same fare is $120, back then it was sometimes a jet depending on airport but mostly a fokker turbo-prop, now its an A320 or similar.

Not saying that has anything to do with unions but union labour costs more, better for the companys and well employee's may or may not suffer.

Just so happens i have seen better conditions for workers in a few companys in different industries without unions.

And there was no need to spoof the fare price by adding a fuel surcharge! The $208 actually included the cost of the fuel for the flight - what a novel idea indeed.

I have just called QF to request a U/G - LHR-SYD this Sunday; and the strike has had an effect on all their flights I was told. All classes fully booked already. She put a request through, but I'm not hopefull.

Bugger I paid for a more expensive fare so it was eligable.

unfortunate luck

personally on QF I wouldn't rate the chances of an upgrade clearing and thus would not purchase a higher fare than necessary just for a chance to upgrade

Yet to miss one in past two years...

Including: AKL-LAX (2pax), SYD-MEL, PER-SYD, AKL-SYD (4x), SYD-AUCK (x5).

Thats only my experience though.

The one time my upgrade waitlist has not cleared was for a SIN-BNE flight at the time of the BA catering strike which resulted in many BA flights being cancelled. No way an upgrade was going to be successful when BA business class passengers were being downgraded to economy just to get them to their destinations.

Very unfortunate timing and inconsiderate actions by the BA unions.

And lots of seats available on almost every BA flight SYD-LHR tomorrow, in almost every category....

Not suprised - mine was overbooked LHR-SYD on Sunday. They offered a few people hotels and compensation.

Hope they pre-paid it for you, rather than promising you reimbursement. I'm still waiting for a the cheque from BA for my pre-approved hotel charges, when a connection delay forced a 2-day wait in London in July.

I didnt get offered (and wouldnt have taken) it.

I missed an upgrade on points though; what made me more P***ed off was a QF employee (not working, but relocating permantly to Australia) bragging to other in the line of her Upgrade "because I work for QF". I have come across this before, when uniform staff finish a shift in PER and are put in Business back to SYD. She was a good looking one - so I'll let her off.
