What are the fare buckets QF uses for awards/upgrades?
Do they show up on expert flyer?

Economy - X
Premium Economy - Z
Business - U
First - P

Yes, they are visible on Expert Flyer if you do an Award/Upgrade search.

Note, these fare buckets only apply to upgrades on domestic flights.

The same buckets are used for international, although upgrades aren't done from available award inventory. For instance if you see a U class seat available you can't ask for an instant confirmation upgrade.

I have a question re QF72 on May 25 next year (see below). EF shows no availability of a J upgrade. Just wondering if it's at all possible this will change? Is there any point in my paying for a Saver fare so that I can even qualify or shall I save my money?

As this is a Qantas international flight, the current availability of U class is not relevant. Upgrades will only be confirmed a few days before the flight if there are still unsold seats in the J cabin. (This is different to the process for QF domestic upgrades where upgrades can be confirmed instantly if U class is available.)
