AVV to get a monorail

I hear there might be one for sale in Sydney soon:

VISITORS to Avalon airport in Victoria could soon be riding a driverless monorail linking a new train station to the terminal building.
The $200 million plan would enable commuters to catch a train from Melbourne direct to Avalon for the cost of a zone 2 ticket.
In an Australian first, passengers could then check their bags and obtain a boarding pass at the new Avalon airport station, before taking a five-minute monorail ride to the terminal.
The bold initiative, revealed exclusively to the Herald Sun, would make Avalon the only airport in the nation to boast a monorail and train station check-in facilities.
The concept is one option the State Government is considering in its bid to build a rail line to Avalon by 2016.

Most of the current services from Southern Cross to Little River take between 35-40 minutes. I imagine with the Regional Rail Link that could improve, or at the very worst be the limit in time for the journey.
 
It's a nice idea but seems like overkill for the small airport, unless the Government has other plans for AVV.
 
Why do they need a monorail? Most of the way from the railway track to AVV is open farmland, although there is the highway of course. It would make more sense to use driverless light rail or some sort of tram. Then a bridge or tunnel to get over/under the motorway. Would work out a lot cheaper than monorail.

Would be good to potentially shift all LCC operations to AVV for Jetstar, like it once was, and other airlines, leaving MEL the premium hub. Though still poses an issue getting between the two.

Totally overkill - I read somewhere that MEL passenger movements are growing annually at a figure greater than AVV total passenger movements annually.

Riddle me that one Batman - oh for a Govt. with balls.

Jetstar operations were never all at AVV. Initially (until QF decided it didn't really matter), to avoid competition with QF, Jetstar major capital city flights were to/from AVV (ie SYD, BNE, ADL, PER) but their other operations (HBA, LST, OOL, MCY, CNS, DRW etc) were always at MEL.

Melbourne is nowhere near capacity and the master plan allows for significant growth still.

Maybe so, but as has been seen at OOL with their amazing infrastructure, LCC’s require less premium things, like aero-bridges, so having one airport for LCC flights and another for premium flights would free MEL slots for more premium services, even if it is no where near capacity.

If they ever find a suitable spot in SYD they could do the same there.

I thought they had a big emphasis on AVV initially, so assumed it was all.

Would you assume that the LCCs will move to AVV or would you be forcing LCCs to move there?

I take it if it is the former, this would be 'induced' by having a very enticing low airport fees. It would need to be very enterprising for that to happen, especially given the new status quo now.


I really only see AVV as a viable port if:
  • It turns into a real secondary hub, e.g. LGW is to LHR, or CRK is to MNL
  • The people of Geelong scream loud enough
  • It is upgraded
 
What is the point?, they have like 4/5 flights a day. Ever since Tiger left and boosted their presence at Tullamarine, Jetstar has cut back its only two markets to BNE and SYD.

Id be more inclined to spend that money on attracting more airlines, Virgin is about the last chance left. There is only three domestic markets that barely just work out of AVV, which are OOL, BNE, SYD. Everything else is loss making.

Total waste of money.
