I was staying in the vicinity of about 10km away from the main protest site. I was fine for the most part, but obviously found myself eating in the hotel or very near surrounds...

Ha! i was staying 300 yards from the protests!! :) The protesters clearly weren't after tourists. i felt safe enough. My only concern was whether the airport would remain open.

Wow! You must have seen some sites! Yeah I was the same about the airport, but the security around the airport was incredible! I just google mapped where I was staying, it was actually about 3kms, but I seem to recall telling most people it was about 10km, so I didn't sound as insane... :)
