The AFR has had a couple of articles. The person in charge of the production of those papers has stepped down and now works in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

And an interesting link from that article on how much Qantas is gouging us. Their EBIT margin in the last 3 years has risen 50% from 12% to 18% whilst Woolworths has risen from 5.6% to 5.9%.

On top of that QF has 66% of the domestic Aviation market compared to Coles and Woolworths 64% for food and groceries or Commbank and Wespacs 47.3% of the mortgage lending market.
The government's response - stop the monitoring of the airline market by the ACCC.
And Qantas response.
But a Qantas spokesman said that “Australia is one of the most open and competitive aviation markets in the world and for the first time ever we now have four jet airlines competing in the domestic market”.
They both think we are all stupid.

The Aviation White Paper (the White Paper) will set the long-term policies to guide the next generation of growth and innovation in the aviation sector.

It will clearly articulate the Commonwealth Government’s policies on desired aviation outcomes in relation to safety, competitiveness, sustainability and efficiency to ensure the sector is appropriately positioned to deliver aviation services for the Australian public out to 2050.

Flight path to the Aviation White Paper

The Aviation White Paper is expected to be released in the first half of 2024, with its flight path passing through the following stages:

  • On 7 February 2023, the Government released the White Paper Terms of Reference
  • Submissions on the Terms of Reference closed on 10 March 2023
  • Public consultation occurred during March 2023 through industry roundtables
  • The Aviation Green Paper is expected to be released in mid-2023
  • A second round of public consultation will occur following the release of the Green Paper, which will include:
    • Call for detailed submissions in response to the Green Paper
    • Consultations with stakeholders
  • The Aviation White Paper to be released in the first half of 2024

Daniel Merlino. Labor MP, was talking up the Green Paper as the mechanism to sort out not only the QR issues, but customer rights as well (on Sharri, Sky News but can't post video on AFF).

Yeah… I hope the submissions discuss the myths the airlines are creating around EU261.

Some airlines are claiming an EU-type scheme would add $2 to a ticket… essentially for ‘insurance’.

My response to that is ‘who can buy insurance for just $2 on a ticket?’ You can’t.

I think a family of four paying $16 extra round-trip, even on Jetstar, would appreciate the value of that in the event of a cancelled flight and being provided with accommodation, meals, transfers and compensation.

Absolutely! Imagine you could actually insure against delays in a way that works? I’d pay $2/seat for that!!
