I can see AirAsiaX jumping on this too.
Didn't Air Asia want to fly to AVV a couple of years ago but they weren't allowed to for whatever reason?

What about HKG?

I guess my point was made as a counter to the argument that the location was cr*p, which I interpreted to mean it was in the middle of nowhere useful. So naturally effective transport options will need to be conceived for AVV to be a successful airport.
You can easily get to Stansted by train. I've done it before. Never would think of catching a bus..
I wonder how people would take it if there was a very fast express train from Southern Cross Station directly to Avalon Airport, running every 20 minutes, costing AUD 30 one way.
I will avoid Avalon with a passion. Unless you live at Werribee or Geelong, a shocking location.

I'm pretty sure people would put up with the annoyance of AVV for $49 international airfares (this price is a guess, but it wouldn't surprise me)... It's amazing what ppl will do to save a dollar or 2. Esp if it means they can get flights to bali and coughet.
Does anyone seriously think this do nothing government will build a train line to Avalon within a decade? The only new train infrastructure in decades has been the few kilometre extension to South Morang, and this took many years. Without a train to the city, Avalon will be a joke as an international terminal.
Does the same criteria make Tulla a joke now?

There's a train line and unused platform at AVV doorstep - what choo talkin' bout willis?
Well within 1200 meters or so anyway - a good spot to put the decommissioned (about to be) Sydney mono rail
It wasn't a joke in the 60's when the Tulla freeway was built for the new airport.
There were different philosophies in play back then.
IIRC, it was the first or second such freeway opened in Victoria (South Eastern was opened sometime around the same period.)

Note at the time Sydney had neither a motorway or a train line going to the airport.
And its not like the Sydney train line has been a runaway success (now I believe this is mostly due to the gate fee making it only cheaper for 1/2pax) but ultimately that was the fee required to make the project viable (anpther matter whether the govt should have just taken on debt for it)
The big issue is that Avalon is in the wrong place.
The demographic centre of Melbourne is a long way out in the SE suburbs and moving further SE all the time.
A properly planned second airport should really be to the SE not the West but where could we put it ?
It's more of a reality than we realise. Back in May constuction actualy started on the high speed line from Southern Cross to a point beyond Werribee so that country trains (Geelong etc) can bypass suburban commuter lines. Thats two thirds of the way to Avalon.
I doubt Avalon could ever justify a heavy rail branch but Lara station is so close a shuttle service with a one bus wide bridge over the freeway would work a treat.

Moorabbin airport is SE but I don't think you can land anything bigger than a 737 there...
