More cases for QLD, if anyone even cares anymore

Two new covid fronts open up in Queensland as Premier implores Gold Coast to immunise before visitors descend

Queensland had two new COVID-19 concerns on Sunday evening as those on board a flight from Melbourne to Brisbane were being urgently sought because a passenger may be COVID-positive.

Queensland health authorities were urgently trying to locate passengers on Jetstar Flight JQ 562 from Melbourne, which landed in Brisbane at 2.10pm on November 5.

At the same time, Queensland has confirmed six new COVID-19 contact locations in Cairns and Mission Beach after a 21-year-old woman who flew to Cairns from Adelaide and was originally not considered to be infectious in the community was confirmed on Sunday afternoon as being a positive case.

Actually, 23 November.

SIL in WA has finally realised that unless they open up there she won't be seeing her son in Victoria. It's been over a year and sadly she lost her husband the year before. She does have a daughter nearby so not all grim. Her main concern is having to have the test to return to WA. One forgets how protected they've been 'over there'. She has been vaccinated a while now though.

It’s not fair that your SIL has done the right thing, got herself vaccinated and is now locked in the prison state because a minority of people have not done the right thing and are holding the government ransom (or as others would say the government is happily letting themselves be held to ransom) :(

Well, it's only just now she has realised this. Up until a month ago, when SA had not announced their plans, she was happy to stay locked up. Reality is starting to bite. She's originally an SA resident.

It’s true I think as every state has rolled out their plans over the last few weeks people who are stuck in Perth have really started to realise they are are well and truly trussed up like a Christmas turkey heading into the oven :(

Flying from PER to ADL in next hour and will get a broom shoved up my nose in ADL airport as 8 days ago I was in COVID riddled Alice Springs before I left on holiday.

Even WA doesnt have restrictions on NT! SA is a stupid marshmallow scaredy cat state. And they are opening in Dec? See how that goes.
Still a nasal swab virgin. SA airport rules confusing, but seemed to talk my way out of it.

Happy to have first PCR at CDG on my way back to Australia mid February 22 on long planned Normandy trip (will only be circa 11 days). That is if COVID cases during peak of French winter dont get too high!

Who caused the disruption though? The woman, or the state governments?
There are two types of disruption... one to the community and the others to individuals.

The community wide lockdown/lockouts occurred because of the state gov. I'm sure it'll be the subject of much debate in years to come if it was necessary but after what has occurred in NSW/VIC, I can understand why they're taking a better safe then sorry approach.

The other aspect of this is the impact to individuals. For those who've travelled on the same flights as her ADL-CNS and CNS-DRW who now have to spend time either getting tested or for those unlucky to be sitting around her now spending 14 days in quarantine.

I don't know about you, but if I flew from CNS-DRW (on a route that should be presumed safe) and then was told a few days later I'd have to spend 14 days in Howard Springs because I sat next to some one who's lied across borders I'd be rather annoyed. Now I appreciate there is a risk this could happen anytime/anywhere these days but these two routes shouldn't have been a problem.

Right now international flights to/from Australia are arguably safer given everyone has been vaccinated and for inbound travel (and about half of outbound travel) all on-board have been tested.

Domestic flights are crazy right now (not that they hadn't been earlier in the pandemic) and things are just going to get worse, here are some crazy example of things that are allowed but shouldn't be.

1. Someone from NSW/VIC (without a test or vaccine) can fly up to QLD and transit through Brisbane airport (no restrictions on transiting), they can then board a plane to SA/NT/WA and potentially sit next to people who are allowed to enter SA/NT/WA with no restrictions as QLD is very low risk. Obviously if that person is honest they'd enter quarantine but others around them wouldn't have to.

2. I can fly from BNE to SYD to MEL to HBA and then back to BNE. Provided I don't leave the airport in SYD or MEL I wouldn't be subject to any restrictions when entering TAS or QLD even though I could have sat and mingled in an airport lounge with others from SYD/MEL for hours during my layover.

3. When QLD starts it's home quarantine in 10 days time, the health minister stated that those coming from NSW/VIC would be allowed to fly into Brisbane airport and then connect to an intra-state flight eg SYD-BNE-CNS to reach the location they'll complete the 14 days home quaratine. Meanwhile they've just flown a BNE-CNS flight with people not subject to any restrictions at all. (This may change but this is what she said at a press conference the other day - offical guidelines are yet to be published).

These are just three example which come to mind, and I find it crazy how many loopholes exist for domestic travel. It's crazy that I can fly from Brisbane to Sydney airport have a beer in the terminal with someone from Sydney and then fly back validly claiming that I was just transiting.

But again, all these disruptions are being caused by the illogical policies of state governments being led by the egos of state premiers. What happened in NSW and Victoria happened at very different vaccination levels and, ultimately, proved to be no where near as bad as expected. The modeling has all been wrong so far yet premiers seem to be setting policy based on even more conservative numbers.

@henrus you have highlighted why it will be years before I ever travel in our country again (outside Vic) and will be using travel credits for overseas travel… all well and good for me with family located in one state/or overseas and retired. However, I really empathise with those who have work/family in other states and have to navigate this mess. I have nothing to offer other than pious hope - in reality state based independent decision making is here to stay IMHO and nationalisation/rationalisation of trans border movements will be challenging for years. Inflexibility and potential disruption now baked into the system. I feel your pain

This is why I hope Skroo takes the whole lot to the HCA and all the petty regulations including testing are thrown out.

Time for some black letter constitutionalists not the creative interpretation we live under at the moment.

Which is why I don’t blame anyone anymore who misinterprets the patchwork nonsensical rules across the country - especially from some states that have set different percentages, different requirements, for different areas, untested here, not there, can’t have been there in the past x days, but can go there etc etc

And even internally. One case sparks a lock out (from Broken Hill into SA) while a few cases (from NT into SA) just testing and isolation until a negative result.

Remains to be seen what they do, but Flight Centre are more talking about going to the Federal Court for a judicial review.

What's the latest deal re deep cleaning now after an infected person's visit?
I see now Melbourne Museum is closed for deep cleaning. Don't you just need to ventilate the place since the virus can't really transmit via surfaces?

If fully vaxxed, that might make Tas Premier’s 7 day rule for returning residents be a little shaky.

Shaky how? It won't change anything. The 7 day thing is just a risk-assessed benefit for residents. And before someone jumps in, Premiers, like me, can also make judgements on health risks.

News from QLD this morning....

"Masks will no longer be required when 80% of eligible Queenslanders have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine That means no masks indoors including schools, cafés, pubs, clubs, hairdressers and workplaces."

Meanwhile in SA, the good Professor will have us in masks until 2042.

There will be lots of ranting on social media. And honestly, given no community transmission since July, it's fully warranted. We continue to be hamstrung by nonsensical restrictions with no community spread. Makes no health sense regardless of how they try to spin it. When the borders open - yes, makes sense. Now and the last five months? Makes no sense at all. It's actually too late now to withdraw the rule given 23 Nov is getting closer.

4 days - was she vaccinated?

If fully vaxxed, that might make Tas Premier’s 7 day rule for returning residents be a little shaky.

Remember it’s not health advice in Tasmania, it’s entirely political posturing. So you can’t connect any dots when it’s political decisions…
