Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Not a fan of the current Tas Government, but credit to Premier Gutwein who stated succinctly last Monday morning that, "You can't go too early with Delta, you can only go too late"...I feel this broadly resonated with Southern Tasmanians and it has influenced the mask wearing compliance.

I was also pleased to hear that Health Tasmania committed to expand the scope and frequency of waste water testing for Covid-19 around southern Tasmania as a result of this case.

Oh dear that’s a slippery (pun intended) slope as others have already commented… before you know it you have other states CHO’s poking around in your poo making ludicrous decisions based on what they think they find there 😂

When I read this yesterday, my first thought was 'its only been 8 days, give it another 5 days'.

19th Oct, 273 cases
20th Oct, 283 cases

If tomorrow is another rise, its the increase numbers that Ive been expecting. I hope Im wrong but Im expecting higher numbers tomorrow.

It's never been a constant climb or decline.

I'm not saying the overall trend won't start going up again, but freaking out over a slight increase is far too premature.

Sounds good but it's really the mantra of zero risk. Bit like total war, it's easy when you focus on a single outcome and ignore the costs.
At this stage, a good leader would be managing risk. If we're planning to open up to NSW and Victoria, zero risk is pointless. Minimal risk would be more sensible and if low level community transmission occurs, gently manage it.
Zero risk is also impossible. Everything we do in life involves risk management in one form or another.

I've been in Hobart CBD all day now and frankly can't believe the level of mask compliance on this, the first day. Since 9 am ( now 5 pm), I think just one person I've seen not wearing when they should - this in shops, on street etc.

What a nice obedient lot we are 😎.
just like us SA people

And now 9 days after opening up NSW is still under 300 cases.Remember this virus can cause symptoms 2 days after transmission. If there was going to be a huge increase in cases you would expect a little more movement by now.But again no outbreak is ever predictable.Just look at the luck in QLD with many outbreaks and not a super spreader in sight.

Will be interesting in Victoria with 1841 cases today and opening tomorrow.

NSW opened up when cases were below 500 a day, with almost 4 times that number of cases would expect cases to rise in Vic faster than NSW, if they do start heading up again.

Of course also expect you will see a decline in testing numbers.

Have had to wear them for months now. No community spread since the last breakout in July. Households limited to 20 plus no dancing allowed anywhere.
Do you think masks are here to stay? Given we have not had Covid here for months now, and have to wear them, I’d say it’s here for another 6 months.
I think they are going to keep them going until we open up and the cough hits the fan. I can't see mask wearing going away any time soon.

My friend in London where they are totally opened up still wears one whenever she goes out

I’d probably wear one indoors for a while in crowded supermarkets but probably wouldn’t anywhere else. We are all going to encounter it sooner or later.

SA is a good case in point. From my observations, mask wearing has been fairly sensible. You still see cars go by with the only occupier being a masked driver but on the whole people seem to only wear them in shops and crowded streets.
I've visited three times recently and each time the approach to masks is noticably more relaxed. Last trip, some shop owners weren't even bothering.

Hope today's numbers don't induce a Chicken Licken media (or AFF 😀) response.
It is harder now having to wait up to a couple of weeks and trusting the vaccines will do the work of keeping the clinically meaningful numbers of hospitalisations/ICU in check

I personally prefer a situation where mask wearing was more of a norm but voluntary. A bit like Japan.

Or people just stay home when they are sick. I think the soldier on mentality though has gone (thankfully!). People will be chased out of office if they so much as sneeze now!

Todays numbers, cases and hospitalisations still trending down:
