Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Noticed QR code’s very lax in Sydney from what I’ve seen. Over the last few days we have been to stacks of restaurants and shops and witnessed very few signing in with some places actually saying “don’t worry about it”
NRL today at BankWest and next to no one in the queue signed in

I thought Sydney did everything perfectly. I was led to believe this sort of behaviour is only rife through Melbourne, which is why they always have outbreaks. Sure these areas haven't been infiltrated by Victorians? ;)

As someone who *is* moving to QLD, and *is* doing the right thing by going into hotel quarantine, I can assure you that I investigated all options and there were two:

1. Fly into QLD and do hotel quarantine
2. Fly into SYD and self-isolate there. The difference with this being you are allowed out to buy food and exercise, so if you can find an accommodation provider that doesn't mind and are able to organise your own transport and shopping, this is a legit option.
ETA 3. Fly into OOL and IMMEDIATELY cross into NSW where again, you must self-isolate for your 14 days.

Driving from MEL is breaching your 25km limit. And again, crossing into QLD without going to HQ is breaching the health orders. Which were read out to me when I was ordered into HQ (as I expected to be).
Yes, but the two travelling newbies from Melbourne were confused and they misunderstood the requirements

They believed that it was okay to enter a heap of servos, pubs, Bunnings, Grocery stores, coffee shops, along the way, while driving through thee states, even though they were meant to be confined to within 25km of Melbourne,

How plausible does that sound?

NSW and Qld restrictions notwithstanding, as far as Victoria goes moving is a permitted reason to go beyond the 25km limit. Whether by car, train, plane, bus, boat, bicycle or foot:

That's not my experience - I think perhaps most people are doing the right thing so they don't need to enforce it as much. I'd be very sceptical visiting places that say "don't worry about it" as they sound very dodgy, not checking QR codes is one thing but actively telling people not to do it is just a bit far fetched. I'm not saying you're making that up or exaggerating, but if that is true the staff are probably not speaking for management and probably don't know what they're talking about.

I don't believe you need to QR code at stadiums as it's a ticketed event.
Well Tasmanians looked at me quizzically today when I checked in to Woollies and BWS.
Nor do you have to QR code in retail stores

People were exchanging and giving away tickets out the front before the start of the game and once we got in and were seated an announcement went up for people to check in.
Westfield Parramatta we were there for about 3hrs this morning and visited probably 40 stores and were never asked once to check in. I stood out the front of several and observed probably about a 20% compliance rate. There were 4 shops who I won’t name that when asked was told that we don’t need to bother. We have just arrived at a restaurant for dinner tonight and when I asked for the QR code we were told “you don’t have to” We left and went to a different restaurant

OK that makes sense then - it is not mandatory in NSW to check in at retail stores. Nor ticketed events.

It's optional. I don't, nor to most from what I've seen.

But when it comes to mandatory venues - cafes, pubs etc, I see an almost universal compliance rate and most places check or at least ask. That restaurant was probably a dodgy one.

Gladys says you don't have to if you don't want to. Fair enough, isn't it?

Wow, didn’t know that. I’m just used to checking in every single place in ADL and just assumed everywhere else was the same. We must have looked like nut jobs 🤣

And let’s not forget the cinema and the thermal hot pools they visited too, which could not at all be construed as necessary to a road trip, assuming that they genuinely thought they were allowed to do the road trip 😆😆

Of course. The hot pools along the way. Jumping in with others, laughing, splashing, having a great time. Sound right?

In Vic events are ticketed, but you still need to use the QR Code on arrival.

Reason being that people regularly let others use their tickets. So the person who bought/redeemed a ticket may not be the person that attends.

Plus if the venue has additional venues within a venue you also check into those if you enter one.

ie at an AFL Game I will scan a QR Code at the ground and scan in again (it is a different QR Code) if I enter the social club (bar for SC Members

Mind you, outside of the stadium it is more russian roulette, though you can only enter your section of the stadium through a designated gtae.

The two new locally-acquired cases are primary close contacts of existing cases, with no community exposure during their infectious period. [2/2]

Vic Presser.

Both of today's 2 cases are children who were isolating.

One of the unlinked cases is now thought to be probably linked by location, plus genomics also suggest a close linking.

I'm not sure why remote is mentioned. Howard Springs isn't remote. Neither are either of the two sites that have been proposed in Victoria.

Plenty of people have suggested moving quarantine out of the cities into the regional areas.

The article talks about the "Special Health Accommodation" facilities (as opposed to broader HQ) set up to care for COVID-positive travellers, those who are symptomatic on arrival and those who have other special health needs.

There is no reason this approach couldn't be followed by triaging (is that the right word?) those going to a purpose-built quarantine facility. I wouldn't have thought the concept it is incompatable with that. You could still have "Special Health Accommodation" either elsewhere, or in a dedicated area within the facility. Noting that neither proposed facility in Avalon or Mickleham are particularly remote, nor is Howard Springs.

But you are right, it does raise the advantages of being in/around cities, and the concerns around more remote facilities with the limited access they would have to specialised care. That was one of the concerns around the proposed Toowoomba Wellcamp facility.

Annastasia wanted the fed govt to fund one at Toowoomba. There is a large freight airport at Wellcamp ( 8km outta T'ba) that can take international flights, but also Toowoomba Hospital would also need a major upgrade to cope with a large number of sick Covid patients !
