Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

sorry are you calling the community spread in au uncontrolled? Compared to where the players are coming from we are practically Covid free

It’s uncontrolled in the sense we don’t know who might have it, and where they’ve been. They could have been to a dozen places before contact tracing kicks in, and in large numbers.

A great deal announced between Tasmania and Victorian governments today. Victoria will take Tasmania‘s share of international arrivals and Tasmania will take and quarantine seasonal workers who will then go onto Victoria and work.

It’s especially good for Tasmania as Victoria will take all the dodgy international arrivals ( they are happy with that, Australian Open etc ) and Tasmania will takethe seasonal workers mainly from the Pacific Islands who are largely Covid free.

Well done the Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein.

How many weeks is this for? How many seasonal workers are there?

1500 seasonal workers over the first half of this year. From The v Australian app on my phone which I can’t easily quote from
I think Tasmania’s quota/cap was expressed as 450 over 3 flights but not accepting international arrivals.

So a good deal for Tasmania if they don’t need to take anyone for say at least 1 month.

The saddest thing about COVID and all the political scare mongering that has occurred in this country is the continued proliferation of some fantastical idea that a Victorian, a New South Welshmen, Queenslander, etc, has any special privileges over another.

Reality is the constitution provides for you being a resident of a state (and you are protected from discrimination - at least the constitution says - regardless of residency), and otherwise a citizen of the nation.

To act otherwise is to our extreme detriment and I suspect those that do (primarily certain state premiers stoking this flame) have something to benefit from it. More power and less oversight would be the main motivator, I presume.

I guess I can't blame those who have their immediate families close to them to want to protect that bond. I wish I was in that situation. Reality is that many do not have that happy arrangement and if we can't behave in a civil manner as a nation, at least some sympathy and humility wouldn't go astray.

Instead of behaving like your driver's license indicates you are any more important than any other citizen of this country.

An idea for consideration is a tiered approach to which flight go to which State’s international quarantine based on apparent country risk

Eg Tasmania and ACT very low risk

How to rank the other States would be a bit of a mine field....do you give highest risk to huge population center with some past leaks or to small populations with no leaks so far???

....Waits for the temperature to rise lol (ducks for cover) 😅

We are we taking seasonal workers pretty soon I think, but no international repatriation arrivals for the foreseeable future.

Tasmania’s repatriation quota was 330. Can post news quotes when I’m back on desktop.

Flight Caps

Existing international air passenger arrival caps will remain in place, with ongoing review by National Cabinet.

If you have a flight booking, you should check with your airline for any changes to your flight departure details.

Effective from 15 January 2021:

  • Melbourne: limit of 1,120 passenger arrivals per week from 7 December 2020
  • Hobart: Tasmania is not accepting international arrivals but has agreed to 450 passengers over three flights
  • Sydney: limit of 1,505 passenger arrivals per week
  • Perth: limit of 512 passenger arrivals per week
  • Brisbane: limit of 650 passenger arrivals per week
  • Adelaide: limit of 490 passenger arrivals per week (NOTE: international flights are scheduled to resume from 14 December 2020 into South Australia)
  • Canberra: ACT is not accepting international arrivals
  • Darwin: NT is not accepting international arrivals but has provided 500 quarantine places per week in the Howard Springs Quarantine Facility for designated flights from London, Paris, New Delhi and Chennai
Restrictions on outbound travel by Australian citizens and permanent residents remain in place, in accordance with the health advice to the Government.

Read more about the changes via Smartraveller's COVID-19 page.

The Australian Consulate-General is unable to help in confirming flights as airlines manage tickets sales and boarding in line with the caps, not the Australian government.

Er what?

Why hypocrisy?

So the old NIMBY argument.... applies pretty universally everywhere! Virtually any project will always have some locals who are against it.

NIMBY = a person who objects to the siting of something perceived as unpleasant or hazardous in the area where they live
Exactly what all the state premiers bar NSW are doing.
We don't want those dirty Sydney people here.
So it is hypocrisy for calling out rural Queenslanders when you haven't used that term for your own politicians.

Now we have the ludicrous position where the coughberland LGA is still a red zone when they have had 23 cases in the last 4 weeks when the hotspot definition of the Commonwealth is 30 cases over 3 days. They haven't had 30 cases in 28 days.
coughberland also has the 5th highest testing rate of all NSW LGAs over the last 4 weeks.

indeed!!

I am sick of premiers spouting "keeping queenslanders / victorians / west australians safe". how about everyone concentrates on keeping "all australians safe"

Paranoia at its best. the whole of sydney covid situation is will under control. the system has shown it works time and time again.

apart from one uncontrolled outbreak, due to lax HQ, rest of them have been quickly controlled by all states concerned.

we must stop this fear mongering and knee jerk reactions, that result in states locking out their own residents.

If it was up to me, which it is not, I would just have them test after arriving in Victoria and self-quarantine till (whether it be at home if a resident, or hotel if a traveller).

Depending when they arrive and test they may get the back the same day. If not then the next day.

I do believe that red and orange zones will all be gone quite soon.

Until it 'doesn't' work. The virus has escaped HQ in NSW. Perhaps lucky the outbreak didn't reach aged or residential care? That could have easily happened before contact tracing even got off the ground.

I don't feel any notion of 'privilege' in Victoria. We have state/federal differences quite often when we go to the polls with different parties in power at state levels to that in Canberra. It's not that way by accident, people vote for it.

1. nothing lucky about it, it was well managed.
2. Again it didn't

going by your logic, let's close all borders permanently till covid is completely eradicated all over the world.
