Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Well NSW should hit 28 days on Friday of this week. However, since we have open borders with SA who have another 26-27 days to get to 28, Im sure that will be the next excuse WA use.

Plus given WA closed border to SA in a matter of hours of a new case, one cant really have anu confidence to book travel there anyway unless you can afford the time to quarantine with possibly no notice (as happened to those on the fligth fprm ADL).

Yes but by the level of logic used, they should be announcing immediate border closures (again) to TAS, QLD (from tomorrow), NT, and the ACT who all have open borders with the covid 'hotspot' of NSW...... and the virus could already be spreading undetected via those states into WA from NSW.... really?

And blaming NSW is just pre-school deflection tactics....

It just doesn't make sense... meanwhile thousands of families are left stranded and in the lurch....

------

Has WA Premier Mark McGowan gone too far?

WA Premier Mark McGowan is as sure a thing as you get in politics to win the next state election, in March next year.

But McGowan needs to be careful. His tough border policies have been very popular in the parochial west, but is he now going too far? The Premier is refusing to open the borders despite the medical advice now suggesting he do so.

The risk is that McGowan starts to look like a political opportunist, rather than a defender of a tough border policy.

WA really is a parochial state. So there is every chance McGowan rejecting the medical advice to maintain tough borders remains popular.

Many are now not certain of that anymore, and a lot can change between now and March if he doesn’t open up in time for Christmas.

The biggest risk is that ex-pats being denied the opportunity to return home to their families over the summer because of McGowan’s tough policies builds resentment within those families.

If the broader WA community start to believe McGowan is merely playing politics with the borders the move could backfire.

I do eat humble pie when I am wrong, and I was wrong here though it seems no one really knows what's the real state of play over the outbreak.

In My Humble Opinion Mr.McGowan must have suffered some terrible emotional scarring when growing up as a youngster in Newcastle,NSW and Coffs Harbour. So he has held a grudge against NSW ever since.
Plus a warning for AP.He might have it in for QLD too as he went to UQ.

If I am honest with myself the feeling of stress and anxiety is building every day McGowan continues to play politics and being fast and loose with people's family and business lives.

There is zero justification for this closure any more, beyond (maybe) SA. There is no spread anywhere else.

All I can do is hope the WA community at large wake up to the significant emotional pain that is being inflicted by this populist. Sorry there is no longer any word for his approach. The medical view is it is safe to open.

Everyone is very confused right now. And from yesterday, so is Prof Spurrier who announced the person had broken quarantine. I'm wondering if that really needed to be announced in order to get the urgency of testing across. And as of today, the person was not in quarantine to start with. This is the confusion. As a less close contact of a positive case, he had to get tested on Day 1 then isolate until results known. Wait for 12 days, well, apparently free to roam, get tested again, isolate until results known, then if negative they were all done. But it doesn't explain why they went to Uni after the second test. But it is all moot anyway I guess. Hopefully there are a whole stack of zeros this week. Many restrictions are to be withdrawn tonight regardless. Just to add to it.

Prof Spurrier wasnt at the Press Conference. I missed the start so not sure why. But it would have been rather uncomfortable for her.

Do you have to get tested again in 12 days?

The person was a casual contact. In general they are not required to self-isolate, or present for immediate testing, just monitor themselves for symptoms and present for testing promptly if any develop. This is the standard procedure for a casual contact. I know certainly the NSW and Federal Govt websites state the same. I’m unsure if SA Health do too or if in fact they were requiring everyone who is even a casual contact of the Parafield cluster to undergo testing and 14 days isolation.
Unclear what information was given to him at the time of his first COVID test.
I would hope that SA health would be crystal clear in their communication with everyone who presents for testing and/or is identified as a close or casual contact.

No. Just the one. 🤷‍♀️ I guess as we are already at Day 9.

They seem to be doing it differently now. For casual contact it was a case of isolate, test once, if negative then free to go about normal life, retest at Day 12 or earlier if symptoms. For the announcements yesterday it was just the one test but we are already at Day 9 of casual contact now.

No virus, no worries in WA? Not so much.

I have been watching this trend closely as I have suspected this to be one reason why the border won't open. No risk approach may not be only to protect the community - but the government from their mismanagement of the state healthcare system. (NB I haven't listened to the interview but just read the written element).

So I must ask if COVID-19 was spreading in WA what would be happening. Hmm.

Edit: I have just listened to the clip. A must listen. I am rather angry & disappointed, my only conclusion that I have reached is that I am stopped from seeing my family due to government ineptitude. The director general can spin it and bring up irrelevant statistics however he wants, but there is a clear trend here. If mental health is such a problem for the system, one must ask where these mental health problems have come from relative to 12 months earlier. COVID-19 isolation perhaps?

From tomorrow Tasmania is commencing operation of a new contact tracing app for businesses.
  • A new contact tracing app will be operational in Tasmania next week. The Check in TAS app will be provided to venues and businesses free of charge to assist patrons and customers easily check in when they enter premises. The app will be available on both the Apple and Google app stores from Tuesday 1, December. Information collected will be stored on a government-owned secure AZURE cloud and can only be accessed by authorised health department staff involved in contact tracing should an outbreak occur. Information is automatically deleted after 28 days from collection.
This was announced by the Premier last Friday.

So being partially facetious we now probably have 7-8 QR venue check in State-backed code systems and 1 Fed-backed COVIDSafe app....

More apps for some IT wiz to hack....lovely

The ACT Government one works well and is very easy. Venues will be able to increase the number of people (reduce spacing to 2 m sq) but they must use the official Govt app.

Sorry to bust your bubble but we have the same ramping, the same increase in acuity and presentations and no closed borders.

Meanwhile rollout of the NT app, “a localised version of the one developed and used by health authorities in Canberra”, hit a snag.

The SA one starting tomorrow isn’t available yet in my App Store either although others are reporting they have it.

Android should be available but the Apple update won’t be finished until tomorrow arvo
Did you listen to Marshall this morning explaining what happened yesterday? My mind is spinning around the concept of close contacts, close contacts of close contacts, casual contacts of close contacts and casual contacts of casual contacts.

And our EA isn't coming in to work currently because of her anxiety that me testing negative isn't enough to reassure her that I didn't give it MrP who could then give it to her. She lives in the hot spot cluster area in the north.
Given it seems the positive case came more than a week later, it might be worthwhile to consider that it’s a slow virus (long time between infected and infectious). It’s great that you (and assuming most of Adelaide) have been wearing masks) and it’s probably a good idea to be cautious for about 3 weeks.

Very much a slow motion virus, although I'm finding it very hard to figure exactly what is happening with this particular outbreak.
Has anyone determined an accurate time line for the SA cluster? From the outside it appears there's a lot of mis-information and there's a good chance that it's still simmering beneath the surface.
