Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

And with nurses etc it is not just the breathing. My daughter finds one very difficult aspect is being able to drink when one would like to and regularly. The average person can just take a sip pretty much whenever they like. When on duty she cannot drink except when on break, and never when in a ward or patient areas etc. Plus even breaks are an issue as she has to act as if everyone is CV positive including all co-workers. So she spends much of her shift time feeling thirsty.
My SIL who works as triage in a covid clinic at a public hospital was describing the discomforts that come with this. Getting dehydrated. Trying to stop people handing their forms back directly. People coming too close. Not being able to go to the bathroom as often as usual. Trying to see the clock to write down the time yet vision blurred from ageing eyes trying to focus through the masks, at a distant clock, not touching anything and so on. She developed a rash on her face from the continued mask usage. Trying to safely get the spoiled gear off. Just to get a drink.

Sydneysiders urged to come forward for testing after numbers drop dramatically

After the state recorded just 12,876 tests in the latest 24-hour reporting period, Dr Kerry Chant said she needed the public's assistance to ensure NSW's cases remain properly traced.

Just spoke to our Sydney team, apparently NSW testing sites are randomly closing early - maybe that is contributing to the low testing numbers?

With unknown source community transmission in the state you think they would be test blitzing?

Well if Craig Kelly thinks it’s ok to say that Dan Andrews should sent down for 25 years... That sounds pretty miserable to me and okay for Kelly to distract from the misery that many are feeling. I think not.

So, are we having outright political digs in this thread, with bolding? Shall I start with a few about Mr Andrews? No? I think best not as well. It would be a long post and distract from the misery that many are feeling.

So here's a conundrum. Our Premier has just been filmed having a covid test for PR. He is currently down south east after flying in today and shoring up the border in Mt Gambier. Begs the question. He has just had a covid test. No symptoms. Does he now have to isolate until he gets the results? 🤷‍♀️

Not as long as he wears the mask. But If I were him I would have insisted on a test that would have a result within half an hour.

Then you have to go to the bathroom. See the problem?

Thats what they use at the FMC when someone from within the hospital comes in for a test. Around an hour.

the official stats only has the last 2 weeks until 8pm on 3/8.Total unknown transmission for thse 2 weeks 15.

So State Governments can close State Borders because of a previous High Court ruling to override the Constitution in a Public health Emergency but Victoria can not Quarantine anyone in a Public Heath Emergency as they can't override their Bill of Rights.I'm flabbergasted.
Nice, you have the ageing information.

on the NSW daily report, see link for today’s data.

it has this table,

Confirmed cases to date:

By likely source of infectionCount
Overseas
2,035
Interstate acquired
83
Locally acquired – contact of a confirmed case and/or in a known cluster
1,123
Locally acquired – contact not identified
376
Under investigation
3
Total
3,620

Counts reported for a particular day may vary over time with ongoing enhanced surveillance activities.

the day before Crossroads Hotel, the count for ‘locally acquired - contact not identified ‘was 361, and under investigation was 0 (zero).

so amalgamating all the information, we can assume the surplus 15 is the same as the last 2 weeks, and there are 3 under investigation.

With unknown source community transmission in the state you think they would be test blitzing?

With the initial hotspot suburbs they brought in a massive testing blitz and opened it up to anyone from the hotspot suburbs, rather than just the symptomatic. Despite the vast number of tests they only found 6 positives from all the asymptomatic people tested.

So in general I think that most states will just rely on symptomatic cases presenting apart from special cases such as international travellers, those in high risk environments, including if they are high risk re age or medical history.

Rig up a drinking tube set up like in a space suit.

She has Covid positive patients at times and so would not risk breaking the air seal.

Plus it would be an additional hazard around patients. Not all patients act as one would hope fora variety of reasons and sometimes security guards need to be present. Then you have vary large patients that require multiple people to manoeuvre etc etc.

Plus the hospitals strict protocols would not allow it.

About the only variation the PPE allowed is that many will wear a clip at the the back of their heads so that the two loops of the facemask is held in place not by the ears, but by the clip. This is less painful on the ears from constant wear, but also achieves a tighter face seal. It does make for more marks on the face and nose though.

PS. The "space suit" PPE is only used in particular rooms. No drinking tubes though.

It doesn’t
Only Victoria due to their Charter of Human Rights.
We in home isolation in NSW must exercise in our home or garden.
No going outside in your activewear.

Basically the same in W.A. Can only leave the house to go for medical treatment at a hospital by ambulance or most direct route or to escape an emergency situation and then only to the minimum distance required to be safe and must advise the Police what has happened.

Undiagnosed people who have been tested must immediately isolate. (I gather this doesn't apply to people who are part of the random testing being conducted at schools to keep up background research.)

Is it a reasonable conclusion that if we can keep the virus out of aged care homes, then the death rate would be extremely low?

ABC had some modelling on what would have occurred without stage 3 lockdown

I think it’s a numbers game. The more people who get it the more likely vulnerable people who are not really old will die.

Don't rely on Parliament to obtain COVID response information in Victoria.

Victoria’s Health Minister has extraordinarily refused to give a verbal answer to a single question during upper house question time in state parliament, as the state faces its worst ever health and economic crisis.

Jenny Mikakos responded to seven questions and their supplementaries during Tuesday afternoon’s Legislative Council sitting by saying she would provide a written answer on Wednesday.

Labor used its numbers in the Legislative Assembly to postpone this week’s parliamentary sitting until September, having last sat in June, citing advice from Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton.

However crossbenchers and the opposition, who between them hold 23 of 40 upper house seats, forced the upper house sitting to proceed as planned.

At least the Parliament in Victoria is sitting, with gritted Government teeth. The Tas Parliament has been mostly shut down, ridiculous given the freedom of virus we've enjoyed. I've said it before - the Tas Premier is enjoying the glow of 'virus free' while not giving the people the freedoms that that should bring.

Some of the comorbidty factors in the US are very interesting to pull apart, and with such high community transmission it’s harder for some of the more prevalent vulnerable (eg overweight/obese, diabetic) to shelter.

It would definitely be less but not low and worse than seasonal flu across all age groups. In those with severe disease it’s double the mortality in many age groups including the youngest.

EDIT: To get into ICU in the UK you need to be pretty well before you become ill and need critical care.
These patients weren’t frail, chronically ill and/or requiring assistance with daily living.
