Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I almost booked Darwin to do Kakadu but then booked Port Douglas instead - hoping I can still go.

Seems some media are attempting to once again create a controversy/push an agenda over the BLM protests and allege people who attended have covid and thus the protests were the cause.

The ABC has confirmed with the Vic dept of health this afternoon there no evidence at all that that is the case. Just because one or more covid sufferers attended the march is unrelated as to how they contracted the virus. i.e. they live in the same building/tower.

So The Australian article was just a beat up then. I thought that it may have been as I posted earlier.

Glad we held off on booking a trip to FNQ, who knows when we’ll finally be allowed to go.
It’s hard - a friend of mine was organising a celebration for her son’s 30th here in Canberra - unfortunately he lives in Melbourne. His birthday is end of July, but she has now shifted everything to early September, but who knows whether he will be able to come by then. If not she plans to have him Zoom in!

Actually no.The Australian article only said that there was a link between the BLM protest positive cases and the Tower cases. Not at all suprising due to the timing of the protest being about 10 days after the first case at the Rydges.
It is just some people like imputing motives to journalists of the Australian.

Co incidentally today is 56 years since the first edition of the Australian hit the streets. In those early days it was known as the paper of the left.It was thought by those on the right that that is why the map of Australia on the front page was red.
As I have said before I was quite a way to the left in those days and was a member of one of the more left wing Labor branches run by a couple of brothers with impeccable journalist contacts. That is why in the late 60s until 1974 if you saw a health article in the Australian quoting a Health spokesman that was likely to be yours truly. In those days the AMA refused to be interviewed by anyone from the Australian.

December 1972 and the Australian came out urging a vote for Whitlam.I spent the day handing out how to vote cards for the ALP in Burwood-William McMahon's electorate.

It is also interesting that the article mentioned a 10 year old boy in Hotel quarantine who has become the 11th person to test 'positive' off one particular flight from the U.K.

There have been another 7 cases diagnosed off that same flight overnight. So one flight with probably around 200 people on board has now had 19 passengers test positive for Covid-19.

According to AFR a million dollars in fines to 500 people have been handed out in Melbourne. :(.

It's really just symbolic handing out fines to those who cannot or will not pay.
The four guys who hid in a train to escape Victoria but found in SA and spent last night in jail were not fined hecause the magistrate said it was clear they couldnt pay it and he wasnt allowed by law to jail them. So they were sent to the quarantine hotel for international travellers awaiting a covid test. If that is negative they are going to be sent back to Victoria. If positive they will stay for 14 days.

So that’s it then? 😳

Just a comment/question generally:

If the first round of infection is 3/7 based on patient zero of the Crossroads Hotel cluster then secondary infection could not be before 5/7, right? My understanding is it takes at least 2 days, but more typically 5 days before someone infected has a sufficient viral load to infect others.

Am I mistaken or is that thinking now out of the window or proven otherwise?

What would be useful to know is how many had the virus in their blood stream before the flight ( because they come from a location where the virus is rife) and whether there is any difference after the flight (whether any cross infection actually occurred on the flight) .

It is just poor journalism. Not sure what what you are implying re motives.

Yes not surprising at all as I posted earlier, and that same not surprising is what it is not newsworthy. What would be newsworthy is if there was a close contact link to an infectious person, or at least a probably infectious person.

So what was the actual purpose of the article then, and in particular the headline? I think most people would take that to mean that there was at least a close case link.

Victorian health authorities have confirmed a link between two coronavirus cases in Black Lives Matter protest attendees and a cluster of at least 242 cases in Melbourne's public housing towers

Sounds like a beat up to me and that they were implying that BLM caused at least some of the cases at the towers.

Still maybe it was just the editor not reflecting what the journalist actually wrote. If so beat up by the editor, which is still a beat up by The Australian.

I just did a google and The Australian live feed, Wednesday, July 15, 2020 (stated as from 1 hour ago) has

Coronavirus Australia live news: Contact tracing teams swamped as Melbourne BLM protest numbers worse than feared
CORONAVIRUS AUSTRALIA LIVE UPDATES: Victoria’s health authorities reveal a growing number of positive tests emanating from the Black Lives Matter protest in Melbourne.

So anything to that headline? Again I am not a subscriber.
It must be late breaking news as I cannot find any similar mention at present.

CH7 did report this afternoon.

Victorian health officials have refuted claims there is a link between the Black Lives Matter protest and a coronavirus outbreak in Melbourne’s public housing towers.

The Australian
reported on Tuesday authorities that two people who attended the protests more than a month ago were part of the cluster.

However, in a statement to 7NEWS.com.au, the Department of Health and Human Services said there was no evidence linking the two.

“We are aware of six confirmed cases who attended the Black Lives Matter protest. Currently there is no evidence to suggest they acquired the virus from the protest,” a spokesperson said.

“None of these cases are known to reside at a major public housing complex.

“Currently, no known nor suspected episodes of transmission occurred at the protest itself.”

Out of idle curiosity, the background circumstances would be interesting to know.

They were listed as being of no fixed address . So does this mean they were homeless people. Were they disconnected from society to the point where they were unaware of SA border procedures. If they were of no fixed address and no means then a fine would mean nothing to them. Fourteen days accommodation and food might be a good deal for them.

Did the magistrate consider In his/her decision they actually weren't trying to enter SA but on their way to WA and just unfortunately detected at an unexpected stop.

The judgement listed some of them as not being from Victoria. Did this play a part in the decision. Is there poor wording in the emergency orders.

Were they deliberate lawbreakers or doing the wrong thing out of ignorance or disconnection from society. Why were they intent on WA, an opportunity there?

Ah my mind wanders.

It seemed a real mish mash.. A student, a New Zealand citizen, an unemployed man and a soil technician. And we the tax payers are paying for their accommodation.

Gledhill had a previous conviction in NSW for being on train tracks without permission.

Todd, a New Zealand citizen, made a “very foolish decision” when he got on the train with Moore, who is supposed to return to university on Monday to continue a degree in sustainable engineering.

Batty said he had every plan to quarantine once in Adelaide, but Mr Fahey said that claim was doubtful as he had no contacts in South Australia, or money.
