Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

This makes me so angry - these two (and others who have done the same) should be fined/jailed big time. If they had cause to take a test, they should be isolatig ay home unitl those resutls are provided. Our premiere asked Victorian not to come to NSW for the holidays even before the border was closed. Some people are so darn selfish.

Normal human behaviour, unfortunately.

Also, unfortunate in Aussie society is the concept of not dobbing. Things would tighten up really quickly if those in the population who know or see something report it to authorities. i.e. people having a party, knowing someone who should be isolating out shopping etc etc etc.

What are you seeing?
Well on Thursday in Canberra, when we had 5 cases all connected to Melbourne, and the people had been all over Canberra before they were finally locked down, I lined up for sushi in Manuka. There are signs everywhere saying 1.5m please. Most of the queue behaved - except for the two young mothers with 4 children who stood so close behind me that they were constantly bumping my handbag. I glared at them and they moved back maybe 30 cm. Made no attempt to control their children, who wove their way in and out of the line, and ignored several direct requests to keep distance. The shop itself had a sign permitting only 2 people at a time. You guessed it, when it was my turn, and the other space for 1 was free, in came all 6 of them. The shop staff did nothing about it. Although in fairness the approx 10 yo did say something like "mum we can't all go in at once". The mother just said "don't be annoying, come on now". I felt pretty angry about it, but short of walking away, I don't really know what I could have done.

This is a good example of a case where Aussies need to stop being polite and respectful and speak up. (and steel ourselves against a possible negative reaction)

The dunderheads in our society need to be told and embarrassed in public, in front of their children, so they stop and think.

This is a general comment, not picking on you. Can be very uncomfortable.

I read over the weekend that the current stimulus packages had not only resulted in additional spending - so extra money into the economy - but had also put more money into peoples bank accounts. How that is a bad outcome for anyone personally beggars belief.

As one of those apparently nasty employers, I am dreading October though. And the situation in Victoria has dashed a job we won there for September because everything was hunky dory a few weeks when we signed up, and put at risk another work contract just won here in Adelaide which relates to a group of retirement villages, if the virus makes its way across the border. Two steps forward, two steps backwards.
Same for me @Pushka. I have a valuable contract with a large company in SA, I live in Canberra, and we were just finalising the work program for 2020 when the virus hit. I'd say there will be no work for me there this year.

I just had a similar experience in IKEA five minutes ago. Dad stood on the x but teenage kids just stood wherever. I kept moving on. I agree we need to say something but like road rage you just don’t know the fall out.

Landlords.

Tenants don't actually have to pay rent during the crisis. Landlords still have to meet their financial commitments. Tenants will still technically owe the rent at the end of the crisis but we are not there yet.
Yes for sure. My 90 yo father-in-law relies on the rental from a commercial property for his income. His tenant is a church based charity that runs a food bank/discounted food shop for the disadvantaged. FIL has been charging them below market rental for 7 years, out of sympathy with their aims. Their current 5 year lease expires end of August. They have now demanded 25% reduction, 25% deferral in rent for 2 years. They are refusing to sign a new lease. However, they have told us that they are not eligible for job keeper (which is the trigger for those reductions) as their turnover is NOT down by the paltry 15% that applies to charities, and I don't see how their business could be suffering given the state of the economy in regional QLD - I'm pretty sure there is a big demand for their services. They are just taking a recently bereaved old man to the cleaners without any care for how he can afford to live. Just owning this property (from which he previously ran his car parts business) is enough to rule him out of the pension on assets test, and the real estate agent says there is no real chance of selling the property given the state of the local market. He is in a very hard place. They should be ashamed of themselves. I wish I could name them.

That’s my rough additions of new cases in those areas since lockdown of Nelbourne was announced/occurred

It is where my focus has mainly been since Melbourne lockdown. The number in Melbourne seem less relevant to me because we have pretty much thrown every measure at our disposal now and just hoping the numbers come down....
I stand corrected.....Melbourne might get Stage 4 restrictions.....according to ABC Covid live blog of Vic Premier at press conference today.

no details as to what Stage 4 might mean

OK. Residential landlords was my intended post.

And I'm actually affected. My bills are the same but my tenants aren't paying rent. There's not much I can do.

I can't give them notice due to non payment of rent.

I looked at Jobseeker. Ineligible. I looked at Jobkeeper. Ineligible.
I feel your pain @Austman.

And sometimes landlords fall in the cracks for what assistance there is. We have a serviced apartment with Accor/Manta and have had our rent reduced 70%. Now the ACT government is giving land tax rebates to landlords who give reductions to residential tenants and rates reductions to landlords who give rent reductions to commercial tenants, but we don’t meet either scheme. They are taking every cent of the pitiful rent we get each month in rates, water rates and land tax :). What can you do except suck it up and cut living expenses to the bone, along with many others in worse circumstances.
We are also in Canberra. We have a small office there. Our tenant vacated at the end of January, having given the required notice in November. Due to bushfire smoke, and othervarious reasons, we were slow getting it advertised - and then, COVID. So we have an untenanted property (luckily with no loan), little chance of getting a tenant, and still have to pay the massive rates that ACT govt charges because we are not covered by their scheme either. Arghhhhh.

They need to start fining businesses for not controlling people, as they are doing in Sydney. Our useless government is still wringing it’s hands and saying they will have to fine businesses if they continue to flout the rules. Just fine one or two, publicise it and shops will get more aggressive. At one level I can see why people have become complacent as we had an easy run, but they need to realise it’s important now :(

I think in a case like that I would have complained to shop staff and threatened to report them, rather than getting into a brangle with the stupid people.

To be honest I'm not sure with all the changes whether I would even be eligible to enter SA - it's to deliver training, so not really earth shatteringly important to anyone except me and my bank manager! And the company itself, an Aussie subsidiary of a large global firm, is being very very cautious about its own staff and me in terms of health consequences. I just hope they will still need the training in 2021 and maybe I will get to do it then. If you come to ANU in Sept, PM me and we can meet up!

You said today and in the country. So you actually have no data for today then and it just your guess.

As a suggestion when you quote numbers perhaps state which are your guesses and which are from known sites.

The Vic LGAstats tend to come out pretty well anywhere from 1pm to 5pm.

COVID-19 community transmissions rise in NSW

NSW has recorded more locally acquired coronavirus infections than cases in hotel quarantine for the second day in a row in a clear sign the state has entered a precarious new phase of contagion.

The Crossroads Hotel cluster has ballooned to 13 cases, after NSW Health confirmed eight new transmissions were linked to the establishment in the south-western Sydney suburb of Casula popular with interstate truck drivers and locals.

NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said none of these cases appear likely to have been the source of infection at the hotel, which remains closed.

The Picton Hotel and Planet Fitness Casula have been closed for cleaning after cases linked to the Crossroads cluster visited their facilities while potentially infectious.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Michael Kidd has said the Crossroads outbreak was of particular concern because the hotel, located at the corner of the Hume Highway and Camden Valley Way, was a popular stop for interstate drivers headed through Sydney. Queensland Health believes the Crossroads Hotel cluster may have spread across its border.

Victoria’s health department is also reporting that two Victorian COVID cases attended several venues in NSW.

they don’t give this data parcelled up.

Vic regional data was from the Covid live data you post - it’s my recollection of where the cases were eg Geelong and Bendigo, then the group of almost 10 spread out in various lga yesterday......it updates new data daily. Not yetupdated today

nsw was through recollection of the daily press conference ....updated already today.

act was through the daily updates....not yet updated for today.

qld had no cases either from unknown source or melbourne/Vic Source....as per daily update to date...updated today

sa the same as qld ...but not updated for today yet.

below is a copy and paste of what I said that you are querying....I don’t think I said today or in country - I’ve been referring to new cases since Melbourne lockdown.

Given Crossroads hotel outbreak took about 7 days to be first detected, we are looking at at least another 3 days to see the first signs of issues of spread since the lockdown of Melbourne.

Regional Vic is already about +15-+20 (to yesterday’s data), NSW seems to be about +20 (totodays data), and ACT is about 5(to yesterday’s data).....sigh.

Sydney’s Star Casino has confirmed a patron who visited the complex has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Star noted the patron had been on the premise from between about 7.30pm and 10.30pm.

“The Star is working closely with NSW Health to respond to this information, including the conduct of contact tracing which includes staff members,” the company said.
