Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I seriously doubt the AFL GF would end up being hosted in Sydney, they wouldnt sell enough tickets to make it profitable,

Think it would sell out locally.
But I suspect that's not what the AFL was thinking..

They ideally want the NSW Govt to bid for the hosting rights, on the basis of all the $$s flowing into the economy from those flying into Sydney from WA, Qld etc.

With all this extra information from left, right and centre, we all need to focus a bit on extra precise passing of news reports/information.
The problem is the blogs are coming out with info and then correcting them. Maybe we all need to wait a few hours for corrections to come through, before posting, but then where’s the fun in that? This is social media after all, not a scientific journal :)

On interstate truck drivers. From what I know of them in the pandemic they frequent dining rooms/truckstops dedicated to truck drivers.

Not sure that there are too many "dedicated" truck driver only diing stops on the outskirts of Sydney (and definitely not within greater Sydney iteslf). Even in remote areas Raodhouses arent exclusve to truck driver, many caravans and cars are always parked in the car park. I regularly see trucks taking up 10 or more care spaces at the McDonald/KFC/HungryJacks/Nandos just down the road from me; and imagine youd see many more at places like CrossRoads which have much much larger carparks.

There are some that would have you believe that the issue is certain people, generally people who fit a distinctly different profile to themselves (ie reside elsewhere, of different faiths, ethnicities or idiosyncrasies) are the reason why this highly contageous virus has spread outside of the containment area they feel is capable of isolating most of a country from an accelerating global pandemic.

I think you may be looking at it the wrong way. Demographics and the behaviours of different groups is vitally important to managing the pandemic. Individuals are not to blame, but understanding that we do not all act the same and have the same health risks is vital to controlling a pandemic.

In Australia spread was initially very much via the affluent and amongst travellers. Those demographics who featured on cruise ships were notable in being both spreaders and also in being very vulnerable due high proportions of the elderly and those with commodities.

The second spike in Victoria has moved from the affluent to the poorer segments. In addition the family groups of those affected tend to be larger, mix more and also live in denser conditions. The adults in this group also tend to work in jobs at workplaces that have physical mixing rather than at those who hat mainly work on computers and are able to work at home. Some adults in this group also lived in share homes as income was more limited, and aspects such as carpooling to and from work are more common.

The demographic of the second spike this had a much higher potential Ro than many groups in the first spike (Cruise ship passengers being a notable exception as they also had a high potential Ro due to physical mixing, age and commodities).

I think one reason that the Vic Authorities did not jump on the start of the second spike early enough with additional and localised restrictions is that they did not fully understand and appreciate the demographics of this group, and that its potential Ro was much higher than the Ro that was originally happening in the first part of the pandemic in Victoria and Australia at large. Having a higher potential Ro is a key reason why the second spike ha accelerated so quickly. This higher Ro meant that the "breathing space" that was presumed to be there was not. I remembera comment at the time was that they wanted more localised testing to gain an understanding of the problem. All well and good but byt the time that testing was wel underway it also meant the Covid 19 horse had bolted.

This was also compounded by not being fully culturally aware enough in terms of messaging, and with some of the sub-sectors not appreciating their distinct mistrust of the authorities due to their experiences overseas.

By the time the apartment towers came along they very much did, and they were also were aware that this demographic apart from having a very high potential Ro, also were high risk with more elderly and more with comorbidities. Hence also the references to being vertical cruise ships. Wisely this time they jumped on it early, and they jump on it hard and not because they were picking on particular faiths, cultures races etc but because the demographics of those in the towers made it clear that they needed a particular and speedy response.

ABC reporting NSW has reported 14 cases this morning... with another pub closed - The Picton Hotel.

14 new cases in NSW, four linked to Crossroads Hotel

NSW Health says four more people have tested positive to COVID-19 in connection with a cluster at the Crossroads Hotel in Casula.

One is a man in his 20s who had dinner at the hotel on July 3, and the other three are close contacts of cases who were at the hotel.

The Picton Hotel has now also been closed, after one person who contracted COVID-19 at Crossroads visited three times while infectious.

A further six people have been diagnosed in NSW: two contracted coronavirus in Victoria, while the other four who are returned travellers in hotel quarantine.

A total of 13 people have now been diagnosed with COVID-19 in connection with the Crossroads Hotel cluster.

The remaining four in today's total of 14 were already identified yesterday.

I don't know about Sydney, nor the Crossroads Hotel. But many roadhouses will have a dining area for longhaul truck drivers and another for the general population and so while you will see all vehicles in the carpark they are often in different areas in the building.

Some will also have special facilities to attract drivers such as showers etc. A number that I know of have separate entrances. Many will have dedicated truck bays if they are really chasing them.

Remember too that I am more speaking of your long haul truck drivers, and not the ones with much shorter hops. Long haul drivers have quite different needs than local truck drivers.

Looking at aerial photo of the hotel does not show any parking bays for the type of vehicle that most interstate truck drivers use, nor much in the way of catering for the turning circles of such big rigs.. ie Semi trailers and B-doubles.

Is there a chance that Qld will close borders again? Also puts at risk the AFL teams that are located there but all things considered that is so very unimportant.
I think 6 teams in AFL are in Sydney, some in the western suburbs, so a bit close.

They might all need to go to Qld if SA and WA don’t accept them. Or perhaps AFL rounds will need a 2 week break to get into SA or WA...

So the ABC report is that the latest NSW daily update today seems to be no new cases since those already identified and reported yesterday after the previous daily update. Just the additional closure of Picton hotel.

That must be on the table as a "watching" . You would think that most of the school holiday visitors are here already, so might be a bit late

ABC: Victoria has recorded 177 cases of coronavirus overnight — the first time the state has recorded a daily case number under 200 in three days

Given Crossroads hotel outbreak took about 7 days to be first detected, we are looking at at least another 3 days to see the first signs of issues of spread since the lockdown of Melbourne.

Regional Vic is already about +15-+20 (to yesterday’s data), NSW seems to be about +20 (totodays data), and ACT is about 5(to yesterday’s data).....sigh.

Yes who would have thought that 177 could be a good number.

However it is good to see a reduction. Though yes any one day in itself cannot have too much weight placed on it.

In about a week we should know if the stricter control measures, probably combined with the awareness of the public at large that there is actually a problem, are really turning things around or not. Hopefully it is.

There will be many who are already infected but who do not not know it yet and so positive new cases each day will continue to be found. Hopefully the transmission rate has already been lowered by change in behaviours so that pool shrinks rather than grows.

What site is that on? I thought that the DHHS had not yet released it? Was it part of the commentary?

Another politician self-isolating after Crossroads visit

Breaking news has emerged around the Crossroads Hotel coronavirus cluster in Sydney:
After Anne Stanley, federal member for Werriwa in Sydney's south-west, announced last night she was self-isolating after a dinner at the Casula watering hole, another Labor member has been forced to do the same.
Anoulack Chanthivong, member for the state seat of Macquarie Fields, announced he would also be completing a self-isolation period after having dinner at the pub last Monday night.
"As soon as I became aware of the updated NSW Health advice yesterday, I was tested and am now in self-isolation for the required period," he wrote on Facebook this morning.
"As an extra precaution, I have decided to close my office to the public during the self-isolation period."

That’s my rough additions of new cases in those areas since lockdown of Nelbourne was announced/occurred

It is where my focus has mainly been since Melbourne lockdown. The number in Melbourne seem less relevant to me because we have pretty much thrown every measure at our disposal now and just hoping the numbers come down....

Edit: stage 4 restrictions are a possibility ....according to abc Covid live blog reporting of Vic Press conference of 13/7

And another 2 Victorians spreading the virus around NSW after not waiting for their test result-positive of course.

And the minibus of Victorians were 6 young lads who deliberately lied about how long they had been in NSW-interestingly police looked at their phones to find the lie.

Also the QLD police are checking number plates and presumably targetting interstate plates.Someone close to us legally entered QLD with her NSW plated car and soon pulled up as rego hadn't been renewed.

At the presser, a question was asked about detected cases outside the Metro area and the response was the authorities are not worried about additional detected cases in the same families where they were already known and quarantined/isolated.

They are doing detailed questioning and analysis to determine where the risks are. In the daily figures (in general) there are cases they worry about - because they are "unknown" with a link not yet established and then there are other cases that are effectively "just a number" because its a known outbreak in a known (for example workplace) outbreak//location, where the employees are already home in isolation.

This makes me so angry - these two (and others who have done the same) should be fined/jailed big time. If they had cause to take a test, they should be isolatig ay home unitl those resutls are provided. Our premiere asked Victorian not to come to NSW for the holidays even before the border was closed. Some people are so darn selfish.
