Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

It is grim for businesses. One of the shares I invest in runs imaging clinics in Melbourne - dropped 10% as soon as the lock down was announced :(

Everything that is happening right now is happening at lightening speed to get the best outcome to suppress Covid. In order to do as suggested requires logistical effort and police/ADF training in things that won't do anything to achieve the primary goal, which is to suppress Covid. Business considerations sadly, come in a distinct second. But possibly as time unfolds this can be refined appropriately.
The thing is though that time has unfolded and we're still seeing the same knee jerk responses from months ago. The charitable might say that COVID was unexpected and there was no reason why a country the size of Australia should have an emergency response plan, but it would be hard to claim that the situation in Melbourne is a complete surprise. This is a very enthusiastic virus and further outbreaks are almost inevitable. Areas of dense population are obvious danger zones.

We knew back in February from immediate cancellations that it was going to be grim. We did adapt significantly using online methods but that has been challenging for all and required investment in elearning platforms. I am constantly amazed though at the business support provided by the Federal Government with JK and the cash flow assistance packages.

Fair enuf but I think we can agree to disagree on this. 😀

Most businesses will be doing it very hard and many will not survive. Nor in some cases will their reason for existing.

I have purchased a lot of things on-line in the last three months. Now, where ever possible I'm buying on line.

While physical stores have been dying for awhile this will hasten the demise of many of them. Myer has to be in serious trouble. Target is nearly gone and myriad others are on the way out. I suspect as soon as Job Keeper is wound up then a lot of businesses will simply cease trading.

The world as we know it is ending.

I know people have concerns what this means for transitting MEL airport. My transit concern in more local, I've been transiting Melbourne via train occasionally to travel between Geelong and Bendigo. I think I'll be hiring a car if I need to do the journey now to avoid Melbourne completely. But that's obviously not an option for someone travelling from Tasmania!
I think you'd be fine transiting for that reason.

Note that V/Line also run coach services which run from Geelong to Bendigo (via Ballarat) which may suit you. Timetable link for that service below.

Just watched a little video clip with a woman yelling at police at one of the towers because she wanted to see her son who was locked in there. Was very very sad to watch :(

With all professional sports teams fleeing Victoria I am wondering what the fallback plan is for the AFL Grand Final.

...At the moment, the general population is on-side but given time...

This is actually the biggest threat, when the general population support starts dwindling.... and all the state governments and federal governments are terrified of what will happen when September rolls around and people REALLY start losing jobs en masse.

At the moment it’s the casual, young and unskilled who don’t have a loud voice. I’m still dismayed that people seem so disconnected from what is really happening with these groups, even some people on this forum. But wait until the contiginon effect takes hold and starts working it’s way up, which will happen. Then people with voices start hurting (really) and see what happens... At the moment we are insulated.

There also won’t be any economic state boundries you can draw to ring fence, everyone will go down we are too interwoven.

So Australia had to go hard and quickly to get a lid on the virus in Victoria because it’s the only way at the moment to restore consumer confidence and then reopen again to drive the economy. It may well be Australia’s last chance to do this with public support.

That sounds hopeful. I checked with the P1 SST this afternoon and they rang the Melbourne airport duty manager but there was no clear answer.
Well at least the QLD Health makes somethings clear such as transittin MEL or even using the Spirit of Tasmania.
If I have a layover in a hotspot am I able to enter Queensland?
Yes. If you have had a layover in an airport located in a hotspot you will be able to enter Queensland as long as you did not leave the airport.

If I travel through a hotspot am I able to enter Queensland?
No unless it is to travel from the Spirit of Tasmania ferry through Victoria to drive to Queensland. You need to travel directly only stopping for fuel if it is required.

Can I enter Queensland without quarantining if I enter the mainland on the Spirt of Tasmania?
Yes, as long as:

  • you transfer directly from the boat to board a flight to leave Victoria, or
  • you transfer directly from the boat and transit through Victoria by vehicle to a non-hotspot without stopping except to obtain essential fuel.
Border restrictions

though this is from last Friday.

And I'd have thought ensuring that security guards would be well trained to secure Covid risk travellers safe in quarantine too but look what happened!

I hope that the Directors of the Security firms who were awarded the contracts, as well as the Directors of the firms who were awarded the subcontracts are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. This could well include criminal charges if the genomic sequencing links deaths to the hotel security guard outbreaks. Duty of care to employees will also have been breached. Plus other issues evidently such "phantom" shifts being billed when no such employee was actually performing work.

This sorry lot has risked the health, including mental health, of millions, and has probably cost Australians $Billions all due to their greed. In times of crisis many step up to the plate, these guys sought to steal the plate.

But who was taking care of the health aspects of the quarantine hotels? This is a massive oversight on the part of the Victorian Government.Especially as other States went with the police / ADF personnel in providing the quarantine hotel security.
Quite frankly one heck of a lot worse than the NSW Ruby Princess fiasco.

That is at least clear, although it may have changed by now. I'm thinking that the common sense approach will be that they won't interfere with people simply passing through.
The difficulty is that when you are travelling for work, you have to plan ahead and it often involves other people. My current plan has me flying to Adelaide, then driving via Broken Hill to Wagga, then up to Balina, down to Newcastle and thence on to Sydney for a flight home. A busy week and one that requires some planning. Even though I've no work in Victoria, I can't help but pass through Melbourne twice.
Corona has me wearing out hire cars, instead of accumulating SCs!

While I am Vic based most of my business spend this calendar year was going to be to the benefit of other businesses in NSW and Qld. The way it is going it is going to be $0 in NSW and very little in Qld. 2020 for me looks like being business wise the year that never was.

Have to agree with DrRon here. Ultimately the buck stops with the Government and the Health Department. Given how quickly this mob rorted the system I can't imagine this was the first time they have done similar. Where was the training for infectious disease control? That is the realm of a Health Department not a random security company. Just one of many questions.

Watching skynews and they don’t agree with the lock downs due to the severity of virus comparing it to the swine flu.
191 deaths out of 38,000 I think the coronavirus is just a bit more deadly.
Interesting there was some Spanish test that only 5% of people have had coronavirus so still a long way from herd immunity.
