Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I wonder how people receiving daily personal care will survive?

There will be many people who are totally housebound and reliant on external personnel to visit them daily for food, personal support and medical care.
Agree. It is very very grim. And we will see the hidden costs of Covid appear. The rate of positive tests there must be very high to take such drastic action. 😔

The towers evidently have many elderly and people with comorbidities...and so they are treating it like an aged care facility lockdown.
That seems very wise so you are thinking it is to protect them rather than some kind of reduction of spread? Perhaps a combo.

Well even though the Northern Suburbs too off, one thing Vic has done very well for some months is to control Aged Care Facilities where a case was detected. Virtually all had no spread and no further cases and no fatalities.

Now this will different as most likely there will already have been significant numbers within the 3000 that have already been exposed and will be detected even it not yet testing positive. But swift action will limit the damage, from whatever it already will be.

It's very upsetting information for those of us that live in inner city Melbourne.

Is there anywhere else in Australia that has completely locked down public housing residential buildings?

It this a first?

I'm almost surrounded by them but not (yet) in one of the affected postcodes.

It's all very upsetting and to all those personally affected, you have my deepest sympathy and support. I truly hope the government gets the support required right.

Surely essential health professionals will still be able to function ?

If you mean the towers it has been stated that the residents will be supported in all ways including food. They are treating it in the same way as an age care shutdown. ie They are not just locked up.

If you mean residents from the towers who may be health professionals, then no they cannot go to work. I suspect that few residents of the towers would be of that group though.

I just heard 39 positive cases (maybe 29?) in the towers. Sad times.

Only aged care homes.

The 29 I heard was unknown local transmission from the latest figures. But 69 cases are under investigation and so the 29 may go higher as they investigate as the 69 get allocated to the various categories.

I did not hear a number for the 9 towers, but I may have missed it.

True, I think this tower approach does set a precedent for private apartment complexes/towers. I live in one in the city, so I wouldn't be surprised if it came to that in at least some towers.

Edit: Re tower numbers, it was 26 and Deputy CHO expects 30 by the end of the day.

Yes they specifically mentioned the number of positives in the towers when a reporter asked why these towers (at least I think that was the question because for some reason our advanced technology never picks up the question. I need to learn Auslan. )

I thought I heard 29.

However, the concern is those that may have been exposed in the close quarters of the environment, particularly as there is a large cohort of co-morbidity occupants. The premier drew an analogy to the principles that are used for a nursing home with one or more cases of covid.

What is not known is the concern the gov has. They intend to test every single person in the towers. It was intimated that any that decline testing will be held in quarantine for an extended period whereas those who test negative may get additional freedoms in 5 days time.

And shared laundries as well as the usual lifts etc. It could be very nasty. Hope the medical and police take stringent precautions with the best PPE available.

Apparently refusing a test means lock up in the room for 14 days.

23 at the moment ...3 to 5 more today...likely to be 30.

Total in towers about 3000. So already 1:100 are COVID Positive

I’m not sure how Vic handled Aged care, but hopefully the resident is let out if they need hospitalisation. I know NSW did not let many aged care (eg Newmarch) out to receive hospital care when required which is very wrong.

It is a problem with any tall building, including offices, due to shared common areas, lifts etc.

Apartment towers and hotels have the additional problem of often narrow corridors.

Yes. Always, or at least in the cases that were reported. Note that after the first couple of aged care facilities in Vic where CV19 got in that the numbers infected never got beyond a few and often stayed at the initial 1 or 2.

Note that hospitalisation is different from general medical care which is done onsite.

Just now confirmed. It is indeed the first time for Australia. :(

If that's the case then maybe we can have the conversation of how we can get to live with this virus because it is here for the long run.

No we can’t that’s far too calm and sensible sorry. And how dare you forward think so much ;)
