Would have expected, three months in, for proportion to been higher than that, even if there a number of “stragglers”, but who knows, is that typical across the country?

That was just what was said about this facility.

However in general some residents, or the person who has their medical power of attorney, have declined the offer to get vaccinated. and no doubt some medically would not have been able too

Only 1 in 3 workers having had a first dose at least though is quite concerning.

I have seen no serious reporting of what has been happening in vaccinating aged care residents. Lots of finger pointing, but would like to see some actual on the ground reports of how it is being conducted.

Though Testing commander Jeroen Weimar stated:

"I think at this point in time, this is the first mystery case we have seen in this particular outbreak," Mr Weimar said.
"This one case is currently not linked ... but of course is a significant concern for us and we will get everybody focused on trying to identify where it has come from and any exposure she may have had."
Mr Weimar said authorities would be working throughout the day investigating the aged care infection.
"It is the most important of our cases today - the mystery case in the aged care facility - and it will be a real focus for us in the hours ahead."

Local (Tas) ABC looked into this during the week for Tas facilities. In most cases where aged care facility hadn't had first covid vaccine dose, they had opted to get flu vaccination first, so deferred the covid one; and in a couple of cases this resulted in a month's delay, not the minimal 2 weeks.

Dunno if its the same situation in Vic of course, but in at least a few cases there is a reason for "OMG, aged care not yet covid vaccinated  "

Jeroen Weimar today indicated that the Victorian State run facilities had their first doses completed in March/April.

So if Flu shots were given as a reason, that would still seem to be a lack of resourcing with enough vaccination teams managed by the Commonwealth Government as a 14 day period should no have been that difficult to work around.

The two arms (State delivered vs Commonwealth delivered) of the vaccination program for aged care in Victoria have progressed on different timelines.

My partner works in aged care in another state and she has to have the flu vac by the 1st of June otherwise she will be unable to work. No mention of the covid vac although I think the residents have been done and a few staff as they had leftover doses on some days.

30 May 2021

Victoria was notified of six new cases of coronavirus yesterday.
Five are locally acquired cases linked to the current outbreak. This brings the total number of locally acquired cases in the current outbreak to 40.

There was one reported case a returned international traveller in Hotel Quarantine
There is one COVID-19 case in hospital in Victoria.

The total number of confirmed cases in Victoria since the beginning of the pandemic is 20,593.
Circuit breaker restrictions are now in force in Victoria.
You can view more than a dozen pages of questions and answers for what these restrictions mean for you at COVIDSafe settings page

Update: Outbreaks

There are now 23 cases linked to the City of Whittlesea outbreak, 17 to the Port Melbourne outbreak and 1 to the Arcare Maidstone outbreak.

Four of the five new cases are linked to the City of Whittlesea and Port Melbourne Workplace outbreaks.
They are two men aged in their 40s, a man in his 20s and a woman aged in her 30s.

A fifth positive case has also been detected in a woman in her 50s who works at Arcare Maidstone, a private residential aged care facility.
Investigations are still ongoing as to this individual’s acquisition source.

More than 4,000 primary close contacts are currently identified, with 70 per cent returning a negative result as of this morning.

The Department is grateful for the work of Western Public Health Unit who have worked with Arcare Maidstone to activate strong public health measures and protect residents and staff after a staff member tested positive.

The positive case reported mild symptoms to her employer on Friday and immediately presented for testing, returning the positive result late yesterday.

She worked at the facility and had contact with residents during the infectious period on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 May.

As advised earlier today, while restrictions were already in place at this facility during Victoria’s circuit breaker period, the facility has gone into further lockdown. Residents are confined to rooms, staff wearing Tier 3 PPE throughout, and staff cohorting enhanced among those not declared
Primary Close Contacts.

The Western Public Health Unit has assessed that the following definitions will be applied within this outbreak:
Tier 1 - Primary Close Contact for staff/contractors/visitors
Any staff member, contractor or visitor in or to the facility that attended the Magnolia Unit at Arcare Maidstone Aged Care between 7am and 1:30pm on 26 May or 27 May (including handovers for staff, etc)

Any staff member, contractor or visitor in/to the facility who shared communal facilities (e.g. tearoom or office space) with a confirmed case between 7am and 1:30pm on 26 May or 27 May.

Tier 1 – Primary Close Contact for residents
Any resident who has attended or who was at Arcare Maidstone Aged Care in any part of the facility from 26 May to present.

Tier 2
Any other attendance at Arcare Maidstone Aged Care since 7am on 26 May 2021

Testing is underway for staff and residents.

There are now more than 175 public exposure sites in Victoria published at the Case alerts - public exposure sites page
New exposure sites are being added to the website as interviews are conducted with positive cases, and investigations are fully completed.

The Department also manages a number of exposure sites which it doesn’t publish online, particularly if these sites represent lower-risk exposures, or if they have comprehensive record keeping and contact tracing measures in place, or if they identify small, private locations.

Public health teams continue to draw the public’s attention to the many community grocery stores in the outer northern suburbs, and in Dandenong. Further stores will be published today as interviews with new cases – and subsequent investigations – are complete.

On Friday, the Department made a call out to people who attended five high-risk bars and pubs to come forward for testing.
Among those sites, more than 500 primary close contacts have been identified, and 57 per cent of (negative) rest results were returned as of this morning.

The problem is even if you had vaccinated every one in Aged Care Facilities by the end of March there would have been on average of 11000 deaths in the last 2 months. This goes a lot of the way to explaining why there will be a mixture of vaccinated and unvaccinated residents.
Some refuse and some families don't want their elderly relatives vaccinated. Some nursing homes also haven't made it easy for the vaccine teams.

So the facts are slightly more than one third of Nursing Home residents die each year.Their rooms are filled in a very short time.
As of the 30/6/2020 there were just under 190000 residents of aged care facilities.32398 died in the first 6 months of 2020.About 1000 less than the same period in 2019.

So there is unlikely to be a time when every resident of an Aged Care facility will be vaccinated. This makes it important for the workers in Aged Care to be vaccinated.

Except that vast majority of new residents would be over 70, and over 70s have been eligible for a vaccine since before Easter - so you would expect a decent % of those new admissions to have had at least 1 dose of AZ under 1B.

Except that the media and some people have demonised the AZ vaccine.
There are many over 70s I see that have not been vaccinated. Some because they don't want to be vaccinated
On top of that there are some between 65 and 70 who were 2a.Not all of them with co morbidities initially but post stroke,MVA etc that then need placement.

ABC reporting that 1, maybe 2 residents in the residential aged care home has contracted COVID....

I wonder if it was one of the residents who declined the vaccination.....

And was just reported on ABC radio that only a minority of the staff in the facility got the leftover vaccines at the end of the day from residents who declined to have them.

This has turned a volcano sized blowtorch on the Federal Government, the media seems to have really turned on them. They aren't blaming SA or VIC anymore...

But staff are meant to go to state run vaccination centre under 1a for their pfizer and they have been able to get appointments since Feb. Staff getting left overs from unused resident doses was a fall back, not the plan.

Maybe it should have been the plan then? (i.e. getting vaccines when residents do, although granted there would be timing issues with shifts etc. and staff do work multiple facilities).
