Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I'm sure like overseas cases of younger people passing away there will be 'contributing factors' / pre-conditions that this poor guy had.

Lets hope they don't spin this to keep the borders closed for another year, using such an unfortunate situation for political tooling.
Not forgetting the sadness for this family. Pausing for that.

Perhaps other states may suggest that their borders close to QLD.

So reading the news it seems like the man had several co morbidities and had for some time, and while he showed minor symptoms he wasnt tested as he was very unwell anyway and it was linked to that. I guess the question is how was he exposed?

Yes the QLD state election is on October 31. If the QLD border is still closed no doubt COVID issues will dominate.
Wonder what Deb Frecklington thinks on this?

It's interesting that she fired the very first salvo on reopening the borders, but hasn't said peep since. Wonder if the LNP's subsequent internal polling on the issue has anything to do with this?

...and now his partner is in hospital with symptoms. The surprising thing is they were from Blackwater, which if I recall correctly is a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. Oh, and no previous reported cases.

They didn say he had been home for ages unwell so she is likely the reason or a visitor.

Yes, but it said anyone from the UK.... not a UK (only) passport holder ;)
You have an Aussie passport? Entirely different. Just need to to do quarantine. Our traveller was a Brit, didn't have any Aussie residency or citizenship.

....as mentioned before, an Aussie citizen does not require permission to return home (unless you are a declared terrorist).

Yes and I'm pointing out the earlier comment didn't specify UK passport holders only but simply anyone from the UK.

No they tested post mortem overnight.
Testing positive doesn't mean that it was Covid that was the cause of death. Apparently he had been suffering seizures prior and they are certainly deadly especially as he was home alone.

So far his partner is testing negative.

So it seems that SA Health, like WA Health didn't read the paperwork sent to them properly before blaming Victoria, the Feds respectively for a 'positive import':

The shine has come off South Australia’s impressive management of the COVID-19 pandemic after the state’s chief medical officer suggested Victoria was to blame for letting an infected British woman arrive unannounced in SA, but then admitted SA Health had failed to read the paperwork.

In a shambolic 48 hours that has inflamed anxieties about lifting border restrictions, SA chief medical officer Professor Nicola Spurrier and the Marshall government have been under fire after it emerged that a British woman with COVID-19 was allowed to enter SA from Victoria on compassionate grounds to see her dying father.

Since her arrival, 19 of her “close contacts” are now in isolation in SA, and the Marshall government has ordered a complete and indefinite ban on people entering the state on compassionate grounds if they are from overseas or have returned from overseas.

The woman had tested negative for COVID-19 in Victoria and as such was allowed to enter SA — albeit after serving less than a week of her mandated two weeks’ quarantine in a hotel in Victoria.

The suggestion that the confusion was somehow Victoria’s fault drew a rebuke from that state’s CMO, Brett Sutton, who denied Victorian authorities failed to advise SA.

“They were alerted — I’ve got the email that was sent prior with the flight details, with the time and place for arrival,” he said.

In light of his comments, Professor Spurrier issued a statement retracting her earlier remarks and conceding SA had been advised ahead of the woman’s arrival.

Although they are mostly doing a fine job, these snafus & bun fights don't do anything for the prospect of opening borders ...

Interesting that the UK lady tested negative in Victoria before leaving that state.

Yes second recent apology following on from the WA Premier launching into the Feds.

It would a lot simpler if all parties just got on with things without the need to finger point. I mean YES investigate why something may have happened, but this need to spout off quickly to the press is not wise.

All in all there are very few cases at present despite the angst. All in all things have gone very well in Australia.

All parties just need to keep on testing, contact tracing, quarantining etc. Plus also recognise that with things like sea freight coming in that every now and again we will see a case bob up.

I know Vic is still bubbling along which is frustrating to everyone in Australia , but they are still doing a huge amount of testing. ie Within the last week the number of tests done in that small period exceeds all the tests that either WA, or SA have done in total. Take off the returning travellers and it is now about 0.03% or so of tests now that find a fresh case.

5 in one household dominating today's tests., and evidently the household is a large one with other members showing symptoms who have now also been tested and are expected to generate some more positives over the next few days.

Even when it's the restrictive border state messing up the process. The lady was tested twice, as you say. All of which just proves the virus takes some time to incubate after contact. She must have had contact just before she departed UK, potentially even on the flight. And of course she has not had a meeting with her father who is expected not to survive.

Prof Spurrier has done well except for this issue and quite clearly has not been the least bit open about the circumstances from the beginning when the inference was this lady had only just left Victoria. Every day the story gets more complex.
