Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

A short sharp lockdown can be effective with not so much damage to the economy. Now if the other States responded in a similiar fashion and lifted their travel bans also when the original State lifts their lockdown. Then we would not be so paranoid about interstate travel which would be good for the economy.

So does that mean you feel NSW has now lifted local lockdowns (eg no reason required for movement into or out of any area) and States should reopen borders?

Vic DHHS Daily Update:

Salient part on the Israel Traveller Case.

Late on Sunday 10 January, the department was made aware by our health colleagues in Israel that a male child who travelled from Melbourne to Tel Aviv on the evening of 8 January on an Emirates flight, had tested positive on arrival in Tel Aviv.

The case travelled via Dubai, was tested and diagnosed on arrival in Tel Aviv on the evening of 9 January, Melbourne time. We are working with our colleagues in Israel to confirm the test result.

The child last attended an Early Learning Centre in Armadale on 7th January. The centre has been contacted and cleaning and contact tracing is underway. The department is working with the Royal Children’s Hospital to conduct testing on children who attended the early learning centre.

There is also more and in particular on the new Traffic Light Permit System.

No word yet on the boy's parent/s test result/s . Presumably negative since only the boy was advised to be positive. That may be one reason why Sutton (speaking during the Vic Presser) believed quite likely to be a false positive.

Well the proposal put to the National Cabinet and accepted by all except WA there should be a lockdown when a Hotspot is declared.Ony one hotspot has been declared and that has now been rescinded so States shouldn't have closed borders.
For those States that are scared as to their ability to cope they could impose quarantine if they wish.Their own residents should be able to quarantine in their homes.
Also if Exemptions are granted for Compassionate reasons those people are usually applying because of a family problem and they should be allowed to isolate at their families home if possible.

Turns out the celebrated permit system revealed at lunchtime, which the Premier declared was required from 5:59pm today or face a $5,00 fine, is not actually available to be applied for yet.

Because the government's CHO has yet to sign off on the legal documents.

I very much agree with this viewpoint. For me, the SA approach was gold standard; ""we're not waiting 12 hours to talk about this..". That lockdown instantly cost us several $k as we had SA work booked that had to be cancelled but, because of the quick re-set, I don't think we lost much overall. Work still needed doing and most was simply re-scheduled.
In comparison, the illogical and protracted closures by other States continues to ruin our business. Because there's no sense to it, it's difficult to work with.

ABC news have just reported another local case has surfaced in QLD.

Thankfully it is someone in isolation.

Case will be added to QLD’s local case count tomorrow.

Our next door neighbours are out of quarantine with the easing of the restrictions. They arrived home from QLD late last week. We disinfected the lift (they did too, to be fair) within an inch of it's life!

Just read the partner of the QLD cleaner has just tested positive,

But the only reason the shut down was quick was because of the lie. Otherwise I'm not sure it would have been done and dusted like it was.

Isn't that the husband of the cleaner?

I live in Regional NSW, was planning to visit family in SE Vic as soon as the borders opened. I even had a permit that was revoked on two separate occasions by DHHS, who keep SMSing me to say I need to get a COVID test, despite not even crossing.

Passed through Sydney earlier today for a family emergency, so suffice to say, I'm cough*king filthy at the moment.

Victoria really is a failed state!

That's fair enough, but have you actually had corona virus yet?

If so, how did it go?

Another local case detected in Queensland as partner of Brisbane hotel cleaner with UK variant of coronavirus tests positive

The partner of the hotel cleaner who tested positive for the UK variant of coronavirus earlier this month, has also tested positive for COVID-19, but Queensland Health says it will not impact the easing of lockdown restrictions in Greater Brisbane.

Key points:

  • Queensland Health says it is likely the man will also have the more contagious UK strain of coronavirus
  • The man has been in quarantine since January 7
  • At this stage there are no changes to Greater Brisbane's coronavirus restrictions

That's fine.

I don't think threatening your taxpayers with fines of almost $5,000 for not having a permit, after locking them out of their residences for weeks and not even opening applications by the time the system comes in to effect is the sign of competent government.

Nor is presiding over (by far) Australia's worst covid case load, highest death toll and longest & most significant lockdown, but maybe that is another matter.
So, you are offering solutions?

I'm unsure as to the point you are making? I am happy to say that so far I have not had corona virus. I have travelled extensively throughout the last year and have been extremely careful. I travel for work and the amount of contact with my fellow humans is kept to an absolute minimum.
My post that you replied to was showing support for rapid lock-down of outbreaks. If I was caught in such a lock-down, I would accept my fate. I'm not so sanguine about knee jerk reactions that cover entire States and drag on, long after the risk, or lack there of, has become apparent to all.
Yes, I do know the SA response was State wide but can also appreciate that it was done to give breathing space.

Are you in support of the actions of the Andrews government?

It is now 1hr and 49mins since Daniel Andrews new permit system and $5,000 fine for those seeking entry to the state without one came in to effect.

Presumably legal documents are still yet to be signed by the CHO.

Well at least he was already in quarantine and also being the partner presumably all the genuine close contacts will also all be already in quarantine. So hopefully there really should not be any additional risk, but rather people in quarantine who become positive.

As it’s the partner, then Qld Health probably now need to contact the 2nd ring (ie close contacts of the close contacts of the partner) and get them into quarantine/ isolation - so maybe 50-100 people

Obviously something hasn't gone to plan. That doesn't mean however that the rationale behind the requirement is flawed.

This was your issue. Are you throwing this back onto me now? We get one chance every three/four years to change governments. So, if not happy, that’s the time.

I can’t see what anyone on AFF can do to assist you, other than AFF providing a venting platform. Anyway, we all like a good vent at times.

Not to be outdone in the race to win the stupidity cup, the Victorian Government has placed a full page ad in the Herald in Sydney telling us we are in a red zone and no entry to Victoria, upon pain of a $5000 fine.

What a way to undo two decades of Melbourne and Victorian tourism promotion.

Hopefully it will act as a deterrent and the ad will save people being fined.

Unless you plan on going to Victoria, then you are not affected.
