Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Being exposed and being infected (testing positive) are different things.

The random PCR testing of those in Gold Coast showing 7.7% (11/143) to 17.1% (20/117) might be more plausible as undetected estimate.

Though that doesn't take into account those whose PCR has returned to negative.

What are you referring to? Those that had a false PCR negative? Aren't we lead to believe PCR is the gold standard in testing with a low false negative/positive?

Edit: I should clarify that the Qld Health (Gold Coast) survey % is the % of the (presumably untested) population, not % undetected of all covid positives. So since Australia is about 10%, its possible the number is about 2 to 3 times the recorded number, so 20-30% of the population.

No. It is suggested that unlike previous variants those with Omicron may return a negative PCR very quickly after the onset of the illness. All the staff I know down here who had a positive PCR all had negative PCRs within 7 days. All young and healthy though.

Well your second sentence would be anecdotal.

There was a reported instance that claimed they acquired a second infection within a month, which most people don't believe was a true second infection, just an extension of the first. In that instance had symptoms, tested negative to leave isolation, then new symptoms and then required to test and got a positive.

Teenager shocked after falling ill with covid twice in a month (Quick search found this link, but I noticed it on news or abc)

Its possible there are a variety of recent anecdotal instances with a range testing positive for all periods, short and long.

Just trying to clarify what point you’re trying to make. Are you basically pushing that the virus is worse than it’s being treated?

Can't be long until that lockdown comes. Wouldn't want to end up locked down like NSW and VIC
Was in Melbourne for 3 day weekend break, had great food and a great time, free as a bird. Certainly did not look anything like kooky WA Health Minister's claim eastern states are in Lockdown in all but name??????????????.

I don't know anyone in Australia that has had it. Not me, my wife, my kids, their families or anyone. But I live in the ACT.

Oh wait, in the UK my mother had it in 2020 and died, and various siblings, cousins, nephews, nieces, etc have had it. But that's the UK.
Likewise we have been very 'quiet' (also ACT) - a work colleague and her 2 daughters (but not her husband) was the first we knew of a couple of weeks ago. As we have been working from home there was no close contact. Now a couple of friends of friends. But really we haven't been impacted (that we know).
I suspect others have had an infection but haven't been symptomatic or have not realised. Heck - might have even had it myself and not known.

Didn't realise covid-facing HCW in Vic got a surge allowance - apparently $60 per shift.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has made a significant announcement in relation to Omicron.

The state government will spend $1.4 billion on more ambulance officers, respiratory clinics and personal protective equipment.

It will also extend the “surge allowance” paid to frontline doctors, nurses and paramedics.

“They care for us - and we’ll back them 100 per cent,” Mr Andrews said on Sunday.

Free ticket back in time to 2020 😂

The modelling ‘isn’t ready’ and the CHO, health minister and Premier are now all in hiding. 🙈

Oh dear…. This is getting Fawlty Towers fast…. The mysterious health advice that does exist but cannot be revealed….

Perth high school Corpus Christi announces two-week closure as 31 new WA COVID cases reported

A Perth high school is closing its doors for two weeks and shifting to online learning following two more COVID-19 cases being reported amongst its secondary cohort, while another school has reported a teacher being infected.

Experts have criticised the decision, claiming the shut down period is ‘excessive’ and will cause ‘more harm than good’ while WA Health appears to be struggling to maintain control with several test clinics abruptly closed without notice.

This comes as Omicron cases in the state surge, with many cases active in the community while infectious and more mystery cases are added.

The WA Minister for Emergency Services was forced to defend the CHO, Premier and Health Minister who were all accused of being ‘missing in action’. The WA Government again refused to release supporting health advice saying that the decision not to release preliminary Omicron modelling was because it ‘was not ready’.

He assured the public that decisions were still being made based on the latest health advice.

The CHO did write on 19 Jan that it wasn't ready

"It should be noted, however, that, given Omicron only appeared in Australia at the end of November 2021, reliable data available for
modelling parameters is still emerging. Further modelling, once these parameters are readily available, will be important in determining the optimal opening time."

ref: https://www.wa.gov.au/system/files/2022-01/CHO_HA_190122.pdf

Keep in mind that the determination of 'optimal opening time' is complex and requires work to make the model fit an outcome that is not really health related.....

Exactly.

Pathetic small man politics

Funny how a decision can be made on public health grounds, but the supporting evidence is MIA. I can't believe people buy this garbage any more.

They are still doing modelling in SA...it wasn't ready in January.
