What a joke - another draw on the way.

Melbourne to get another poor rating if Day 1 is anything to go by.

Does the "poor rating" matter? I mean, impact anything?
They got it last year and have served up the exact same dross.

Doesn't it mean they miss a year if you get 2 'poor' wickets in a row?

"One demerit point will be awarded to venues whose pitches are rated by the match referees as below average, while three and five demerit points will be awarded to venues whose pitches are marked as poor and unfit, respectively,” the ICC said. “When a venue accumulates five demerit points, it will be suspended from hosting any international cricket for a period of 12 months, while a venue will be suspended from staging any international cricket for 24 months when it reaches the threshold of 10 demerit points.”

They got 3 points last year so another poor and its 12 months off?

So by that they'll miss out on 12 months international cricket...

No doubt CA will be having a word to the match referee to ensure tgat doesn't happen...:rolleyes:

Gabba happy to step in, no local bias here..

But seriously, CA will be hoping for a result here to get the 'below average' they need to have another crack

Lol at this points thing.
The frost will be forming at Hell’s gates before the MCG lose a Test. Even if they keep dishing up a slab of the Hume Hwy as their pitch each year.

If it ends up as the same result as last year, with very few wickets falling, why shouldn't they?

Test cricket isn't the most favoured with the paying public, and this absolute cough served up by the MCG each year does nothing to help revive any popularity.

My understanding is that these new rules came into effect a few days after the end of the 2017 Ashes Test. Therefore, the most Melbourne will get as a penalty is a fine. In any case, I'd wait until the end of the Test until I formed judgement on the pitch. The Test against Pakistan (?) next summer will be played at the MCG. The problem is drop-in pitches. Until that is addressed the current situation in Australia will continue.

At least the 2017 Melbourne pitch should be approved by Alistair Cook as it will probably be important in getting him a knighthood in a few days.

I’d suggest generally benign Aussie pitches have been an issue far longer than drop-ins have been around

I don't disagree that there are long established problems. The MCG has been one of the most placid for many years. Drop in pitches have been around for many years too. I recall one being used at the MCG at the turn of the century but I'm not sure if they have been continually used since then. They certainly used a primitive version in WSC in the 70's. They are not like the real thing but their attraction to ground owners is obvious.

For as Long as I can remember, 1974-75, MCG has been flat and low and dead....

Perhaps the upheaval of the Olympics mentioned earlier (picture of the dig) where the old Square would have been dug up was the genesis ?

Talking of Squars, I dug up this at the Square & Compass

I wouldn't disagree either, the difference is Test cricket was still the most popular format of the sport, now it is waning and we need for it to be a proper contest between bat and ball to bring the interest back in the game.

Now with Adelaide (and maybe Perth, but a little to early to tell) it looks like they may have actually started to work out the art of the drop-in pitch as over the last few years it has been a great contest between bat and ball, so let's hope when they redo the MCG drop-in's it does the same.

Well. I dawdled here...

Pujara made his second 100 of the series

Lunch 2/277. It’s a dawdle. Can hardly see any result looming other than batting first draws or wins

Discussion on ABC radio this morning - new WA drop in pitch has ~ 70-80% clay content, MCG more like 50%. Apparently makes quite a difference to bounce (in particular) as heat sets the clay. Also some discussion that the MCG drop-in was one of the first in the world, and now they know a lot more about how to manage the drop-ins it might be time to go back to the start with the MCG drop-in (and eg. increase the clay content for one). I'm sure it's far more technical than that but that was the gist of the discussion this morning.

I suspect the Adelaide one has a lot of clay too because, well, that’s Adelaide soil. The oval is really well drained as well.

Adelaide has always been prepared with a view to a result over 5 days.....

The classic Test contest between bat and ball
