ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I think you jinxed us. I received a letter from Amex today - Ultimate card will earn 0.5 points per dollar for ATO payments from 22 July.

... which means i'm cancelling it come 23 July!

Oh dear. Looks like the ATO gravy train is coming to an end.

Likewise I will be cancelling mine. Might pre-pay a lot of tax first though..

Thanks for this update Egg on Amex Ultimate. I am happy with the number of points that our 2 cards have produced since we started with the post from JS. It has run for four years and has saved us a bunch that has allowed us to travel in style.
The problem is that we have become accustomed to flying up in the pointy section and we have been pretty relaxed with spending points.
We are in Sydney this weekend for Carmen so I am hoping it is a dry night. Now that was another great JASA out of Perth to Sydney.
Looks like it is going to be more difficult to harvest our just rewards!

It seems all that's left for ATO earn are the 1ppd Visa/MCs & bank-issued Amex + Visa/MC combos.

Yes it seems that more than one door is closing at the moment. Citi were a bit cute in not telling so there would be quite a few card holders who don't know about that change.
I think You could rotate ATO payments through now to July 21st on our Amex direct cards. It was always possible to do about 5 or 6 credit limit amounts through per month (before it becomes GAME OVER). That way they will remember you when you are gone (from Amex Ultimate).
You will miss the free days of credit if you do the charge /pay option several times a month.

... except for Citibank or the Woolies Everyday Rewards (who cancelled my card for using it for ATO payments). The options are becoming limited. Amex must have lost alot of customers - i guess all those points were costing them a pretty penny!

Yes if points from QF cost 1.0 to 1.5 cents each to the Bank and Amex then selling them for sub 1.0 cent each does not work.
Egg I was sorry to hear you lost WooliesCC as I use it for lots of personal stuff.
Last night I worked on my Citi points and excluding the ATO they paid out on the rest (within a small error tolerance).
I won't be calling them.

Thursday was rather busy for gov't necessities with two truck insurances/regos, 2xNSW OSR payments, Sydney Water payment and Vodafone - yes the network still works. The 20K+ points at the normal 2x rate all accrued in Select no problem.

DaveB are you sure about Vodaphone?
I guess their system may work now that they have lost 2 commas of customers.
East coast payroll taxes are still working nicely and so are those licences and stamp duties. I had two pages of statement and took off the ATO then adjusted the international spend and it almost reconciled. Close enough anyway but nothing like Amex Ultimate where it is easy to see and accurate as well.

Citi were a bit cute in not telling so there would be quite a few card holders who don't know about that change.

I lost about 38,000 points because I put through tax at the start of March not knowing Citi had changed their policy.

I've lodged a complaint about it with Citi and I was offered 12,000 points in full and final settlement because I am a "valued customer". I declined and have told them I either want the full points or I'll be seeing them at the FSO.

Big call, though worth it if you can substantiate the spend was personal.
.
Funny about Vodafone, but thru a strange quirk, family/business have current accounts with all four main players including Virgin. Have yet to make changes to our contracts with any of them without having to have repeated, try three or four times to finally receive what we signed up for.

Think I ask this each year, but this time a different card .
Have an ATO payment bigger than limit on card.
Put card in Black by $5K will cover the ATO payment.
Now does "overlimit" factor anywhere into this idea with credit card limit?
Will get points for card being in positive?
Should be O.K with 3x ATO's on one statement under $20K total?
Mac card still working, but took some effort to setup coming from Jetstar :/

I'm always putting my card in the black to make larger payments and always got the full points. Admittedly never for a large ATO payment.

What about DJ Amex? I looked on the T and C and no where does it say "govt charges do not earn points" as all my other CC do. Any ideas? Because at 1 point for $1 even with the higher Amex surcharge it's still better than no points at all on ATO payments or .5 per $1 like Amex issued Amex cards.

That may be the next of the dominoes to fall. Although 1pt/$ is still not all that flash with Amex CC surcharge. Bank issued Amex cards still offer better value. And who knows how long they will last. We can only hope that there are contractual issues between Amex and the banks which make it difficult for them to unravel (enhance) benefits.
