ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

2. Paying BCC via direct debit via Sniip
- this incurs a Sniip fee, but gives full Amex points
Sniip fee = 1.29% + 0.52% BCC fee = 1.81% for 1.125 QF point

Thanks for your worked examples - they have been helpful getting my head around the maths !

Quick query here though - when using Sniip etc to pay a bill via BPay, isn’t there no cc fee from the merchant ? So in your example of BCC, would it just be

1.29% with Sniip (Amex via BPay) and 2.25 MR/$
vs
0.52% direct Amex on BCC website, and 1 MR/$

?

I have a business that uses it too, but you can separate business with personal spend on it

Thanks for the heads up. How do you get to 15 a day with the ATO? My payments start declining once I get to 5 then it resets the next day. It’s not exactly 24 hours but not 1 past midnight either (I haven’t tried this but made payments at 9pm then tried at 9am the following. Day and it didn’t work until lunchtime.
You can pay through ATO and GovernmentEasyPay. It's 15 all up. Payment options | Australian Taxation Office

The website is very opaque.

Amex at 1.95% + GST, but their sparse help pages don't mention whether ATO payments through them will count as government spend or whether you get the full 2.25x points...

Thanks for the heads up - looks different to the site I usually use ATO - Card Payment

I'll log in using my MyGov ID and try it out. 15 payments sounds like alot easier than 5 a day. At $1,247.50 per day, need to get started well before the due date. This will boost daily payments to $3,742.50 per day - better than nothing - though I imagine if the bill is large enough, this won't work either. The $250 Coles MC GCs are a good option otherwise for us mere mortals at least while the fee free offer continues. Not sure if it's worth the effort/cost after that.
:)

Is it possible to buy more than 10 of the $250 cards?

Have a new ANZ card coming and hoping to knock off alot of the bonus point spend on the coles cards...

I've only bought 6 recently in 5 separate transactions. Would just be careful about buying too many in one transaction. I tried to do 5 in one go and it got my card blocked and I had to call the fraud team.

I bought 10 to equal the site daily maximum of $2,500. Any further are blocked. The site blames the decline on Amex but Amex tells me my account is in good standing and they received no authorization request.

Doesn’t seem to. Also clear my cookies and browsing history in chrome for windows before further attempts. It did help to get my one a day purchase approved while I was overseas though coming in with an AU IP with VPN - I think it automatically blocks purchase requests from overseas.

They have just shutdown amex. I was paying 1.7% + GST

Sniip here we come (unless there is a cheaper way - GC too much effort to pay $100k per quarter)

Hi All
I am trying to get around the 15 per day ATO transactions.
Do you know if I 'accidently' pay into my income tax account, can my accountant then transfer it to my activity statement account?

Why can’t you just pay into the activity statement account?

I found that I could only get access to the corporate trustee for my family trusts and SMSF which the ATO would then not transfer that credit to the underlying trust/SMSF. I now just try to get started with my payments as early as possible when my accountant tells me I have a payable so I can make sufficient payments to reach "target" before the due date - kind of tedious but works - not as well as before but someone's got it in their head that people are using the ATO for money laundering or some other evil activity. Whilst I'm sure it will display my lack of knowledge of such things, why would anyone launder money through the ATO - isn't that just poking the bear? Happy to be corrected.
