ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I still don't know why the ATO charges 0.77% for domestic ccards when Qld State Govt only charge 0.51%.
As they don't have different rates for different tiers of cards (eg premium, corporate, super premium etc), it could well be that the bulk of the ATO's Visa/MC payments are made via those more expensive card tiers (which normally cost more to process than 'basic' credit cards), and so the percentage they're charging reflects the domestic credit card average. Or, their acquirer may charge ATO a flat percentage for all domestic cards under the same basis, recognising the big chunk of premium transactions the ATO would process.

If you want to see the wide spread in processing fees between basic, premium etc, just Google 'Vodafone credit card surcharge' as there's a whole table, and they go to the trouble of working it out with every payment.

As to why the ATO is different to QLD Govt, could be a different acquirer mixed with the balance of card types processed, where perhaps the QLD Govt processes a lot more 'regular' cards from everyday people vs the ATO, to which the bulk of payments would come from business owners etc.

Just want to clarify on sniip.

Say you have a bill for $1000, will they charge your card $1015 so you get points on the surcharge too? Then $1000 is bpay'd to the bill issuer?

@daft009 looks like you sleep like me.
Have to get ready for quarterly taxes off a bumper quarter ending today.
I may run up points for others as we appear to be locked up in Perth until April 2022.

Has anyone used Revolut or Zip Pay to pay ATO bill? Or am i missing something and better off using creditrewards or sniip? It's a few grand i dont have an ABN.

How do you make points Using Revolut? Thought Revolut was a debit card. You can pay a higher AF to get some points but the earn rate is pretty puny.

You're right, my bad. I'm only new to it and misunderstood its capability. Scratch Revolut from my question!! :D

....Zip Pay you can generate a CC (visa) and then pay it off with whatever credit card. I'm only doing this for CC sign up bonus points, not normal point earn. So with Zip Pay if i understand correctly you'd use their CC number, pay the standard ATO visa surcharge, pay off zip pay using your bank issued CC therfor being eligible for points just like using an alternate payment gateway via bpay such as creditrewards/yak etc?

Can you not load Revolut with a CC in Aus, like you can in the UK? Just pay the CC the same day to avoid / minimise any charges.

I think the problem here is loading money from CC to Revolut most (maybe all) cc will charge it as a cash advance. At least i saw a few people remark experiencing that over on ozbargain.

That's been my experience - most recently with CBA this week. Keen to hear if there is one which doesn't. Guess it would be a potential points making machine so it's all pie in the sky.

You can pay via amex directly but they charge 1.4%. You can also do BPAY but I would need a method that allowed me to pay a large amount and not incur fees.
Beem it, no fees but $2k/day and 10k/month visa/mc only.

Sniip for Amex with 1.5% fee but you will get full points, unlike paying direct with 1.4% fee

Would I be able to use Aussie Post "Post Billpay" to pay transfer duties and still get points ?
(Beemit sounds good but shame about the daily limit)
