ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

This is an interesting topic and I'm surprised it hasn't evolved (devolved?) into a more detailed analysis of the relationship between the various parties.
The ATO is basic. They charge a fee because they get charged a fee. From then on it gets interesting. I pay a $10k tax bill with Amex. Tax office hits me (say) $150. I gain 10,000 points which I use to upgrade a forthcoming economy flight to business. In this scenario no-one loses. The ATO covered their costs. The airline only upgraded me because there was no paying bum in that seat and I've paid $150 for the upgrade.
There are other sides to the coin where the airlines lose out. They are obviously aware of this, as are the banks. Hence the push back.
What is the ideal balance? Any takers?

Airlines sell points to banks and other institutions. The aim is to get their planes as full as possible because once the doors shut there are no further sales. It is like a flying cinema....once the show gets rolling the sales for that show stops.
So there are freebies of staff getting to a starting place. Then there are folks who book on points or points plus pay and finally many who pay for tickets on that flight. It is a mixture and with a bit of luck they can eke out a profit.

technically AMEX have lent you the $ and they pay interest on the funds for the time it takes you to repay (yes i appreciate you may put the card in credit/pay same day etc)

visa/master a bit different as more parties involved but similar issue. the credit card department has to pay for the use of the bank's funds, pass some on etc

Made my first payment through MyGov today as AusKey isn't working now on my Mac and couldn't be bothered fixing it, had to do 2 smaller payments though as it didn't accept one of $31k, anyone else found this??

Just to add further info, I was on the phone to my card company at the same time as I was trying, making sure the pre-authorisation was actually in place as I had tried a few times already and they were saying nothing was showing up at their end that I was trying the card. As soon as I dropped it down to an 11k then a 20k payment it went through fine so there maybe some sort of limit they will accept on MyGov.

Time for paying the 1/4 GST next week :).........more points.........

Qudos card:

I've got about $50k in tax I need to pay soonish. My Qudos limit is only $6k. Am I able to put it in credit by say $50k, and then pay straight out to the ATO? Can anyone see any problems with this?

Otherwise I'd probably have to transfer in $6k every day and pay it out the next day. But that seems like a hassle, so am trying to avoid this....

You can put the card in credit and then pay it. However, you probably have a per day limit on how much you can pay. On my Qudos card, although I can put it into credit as much as I want, I can't pay more than $10K per day on it.

Just do $10,000 a day if that is your limit.

My limit is only $6k, I guess I can transfer all over at once, and then break it down to $5 or $6k a day in payments. Its kind of the last hurrah for this card, I'll probably get rid of it after this....

Great, thanks :)

IME - preload ok, under 15k/day ok

What I meant to say was load $15000 onto the card and use a bit of your $6000 limit on paying the first and second $10,000 plus 54 +54 charge. Reload and just do $10,000 each day for 5 days.

We are getting $20,000 a day paid because we have 2 separate Visa cards. I reloaded Westpac Kris Flyer Platinum Amex as a back up and our US cards will be reloaded during next week. We are concentrating on the one that has to be finalized by 21st.
All the others are due by 28th.

Big Dogs T shirts new one....."I pay more taxes than Donald Trump"
Not hard because it appears he has avoided paying any taxes for years and years.

With the pending demise of the Qudos Visa card, are there any Visa/Mastercards left that still pay on ATO txns?
