ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Thanks for the heads up re Visa1s might. Was building up a supply for an impending bill. Might hold my horses until there is clarity on this. Sounds like before long, RewardPay will be the last bastion left for ATO.

Not quite albyd....I had all the CCs I used pay up in the last 6 weeks come through with points and miles.

I've got a bill for just over $3000 and conditional approval for a Macquarie Black Card with Qantas rewards. I was planning to pay my bill with the MacBlack card and wanted to see if anyone has done this and have it meet the minimum spend requirement for the sign on bonus?

I've had a read through the T&Cs, with ATO spend not being an 'eligible purchase' for earning points but note that with other banks, ATO spend also doesn't earn points but is counted towards the min. spend for the sign on bonus.

You won’t get points directly from paying the ATO on that card but it may get you the sign on bonus. Someone may know the answer.

I've had similar issues with Energy Australia where their site will only accept 3 or 4 Visa 1's per day; seems to be something to do with an "anti-robot" algorithm. I wait 24 hours and its fine. YMMV.

Energy Australia's system will only allow 3 transactions in a 24 hour processing period (I found this out through trial and error like you, Jacques Vert). The system allows another 3 after each batch has been processed.

I gave my son some ATO to pay by November 21st last night and I just saw an emailed receipt come thru at 4.46 am. Definitely a frequent flyer fiend in the making.
Flying his girlfriend in first class seems to have emptied his unending supply of Kris Flyer Miles because they are so easy to redeeem.
This month I gave one of my brothers some tax to pay and it went thru within a day. He has been running on empty ever since he started flying into CDG more regularly.
He has a Kris Flyer Amex.

We are going to miss this card a lot!
Clearly this is the best card for ATO, but what is the next best?

Back in the last two hundred posts you will find the answer Pointy Bird. US CCs are out now so that is a shame so forget them.

Can I pay Personal tax through Optus Easy Pay or is that allowed only through the myGov payment facility? I've got a fairly large Personal tax bill due next week and have a lot of visa1 that I have stocked up.

As a just in case the rumour is correct about Westpac Amex Kris Flyer CC biting the dust in 2018 I applied for another Kris Flyer Miles CC that is a Visa. It was approved very early this morning.....by way of a text around 3am.

Any hints as to which card you are talking about?

I don't think so kpc but I could be wrong. I got rid of that card about a year after they stopped ATO.
I used BWW for land tax everywhere this year and I had to load the card seeing I have a $12,000 limit that I tried to increase without success.
Think I will do 7 figures on that CC this year.
Dragon CC is the new one and it has a good sign on bonus based on a 90 day target spend .
Social media seems to be read by bank folks who control the switching off so better to not mention the bank by name.
My son has tested this CC for a year. Currently 0.78% fee on Visa but Kris Miles are worth double the Qantas points the way our family use them.

I will be sad on April 4th when our Amex Kris Flyer Westpac credit card stops working.
Agree.

I will need to calculate if Rewardpay with its tax deductable fee is worth it for a suite return to Europe.
The other ATO friendly cards listed a few pages ago are not as friendly as Krisflyer.

With the forthcoming demise of my favourite ATO credit card (Krisflyer Amex), I have been looking at various other options. Rewardpay which initially I thought was too expensive, is actually an attractive option.
Here are my calculations for how much it would cost in fees to fly Melbourne to Europe in Singapore Airline Suites (my preferred option).

Points needed for return flight Melbourne to Paris 1st Class Singapore Airways Suite Saver 296,000. Plus Tax required $260.79.

For 296,000 KF points, one needs 296,000 Ascent rewards points from Amex (1:1 conversion).

To earn 296,000 Ascent points, one needs to spend $148,000 on Amex Explorer. This assumes the Explorer card has been linked to the Ascent program.

To pay ATO, Explorer cannot be used directly, hence one option is to use Rewardpay. This costs 2.4% + GST = 2.64%

For a tax bill of $148,000, the Rewardpay fee would be $3907.20. But this is tax deductible (depending on personal circumstances). Hence actual cost of rewardpay if on top tax bracket is 53% of $3907.20 = $2070.82.

If we add the tax required for the flight of $260.79, that gives a total cost of $2331.61. For those who have substantial tax to pay, that seems to be an inexpensive way to fly to Europe return on suites.

Pointy Bird the highest personal tax rate is 45% for incomes over 180,000 to which you must add the 2% Medical Health levy so that makes the highest rate all up 47%.
Bill Shorten wants to put a 2% additional deficit repair levy back on to make the highest personal tax rate at 49.5% and he has that as one of his tax policies.
Fortunately for the moment Bill Shorten is still warming the Opposition bench so 49.5% is not yet a reality.
