ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Not sure whether this has been posted before ... Virgin Money cards no longer (since March) accrue points for payment of Govt Charges .. this includes ATO payments.

CBA diamond pays points for both the Amex & the MasterCard different earn rate & different surcharge at the ATO

I've put lots through with no problems

By different earn rates are you saying you don't receive the full 3 points per dollar for the Amex?

You get the 3 points but if you're in the direct transfer to Qantas scheme ( you need to opt in) it's 2 points for 1 Qantas point so Amex = 1.5 per $ MasterCard = 0.625 per $ But ATO charge 1.45% surcharge for Amex & only 0.48 for visa/MasterCard

If you're not in the Qantas scheme you'll get 3 points to use at Myers flight centre etc or spend on overpriced gift cards & tvs etc

For me the Qantas direct works well and IMHO is a better deal

FWIW, ATO payments are still earning QFF points on Westpac Earth Platinum Plus Amex card this month. Considering the points cap is about to kick in next month, I know this news is a bit redundant, but at least bodes well for the Westpac Earth Black Amex card I've just activated.

Yes, all good here too on Westpac Black. I think the Black thing is a male thing - my son has a co-card and is very impressed with it. I just think it is, well, a boring black card! :)

I'm finding they get marked/scuffed/scratched much more easily. They even look icky where the activate sticker was after peeling it off!

Having been travelling for 2 weeks I arrived home to our tax assessments. Thankfully we each received a "mature age worker offset" to cut $500 off each of the 2012 bills.

Another vote for "Westpac black worked for me".

First time ever paying an ATO bill though - methinks I might be volunteering to pay for my Dad's BAS more often :)

Black is an expensive option but I'm forced to use it too when I think I'm clocking up too much up on WOW.

So the search for the new holy grail continues.

Depends what price you used to pay for the Altitude for many of us :p (149 for me for reference).

Just to clarify, I meant Black is expensive for points at 0.625 QF pts per $1 compared to previously Citibank Gold at 1.2 QF pts per $1.

Most would not now go Visa to get big numbers of points on ATO. They would tend to go the Amex 1.5 points per dollar seeing Citi and ATO are extinct.

Before I asked on here about receiving CBA diamond reward points for ATO payments, I asked the CBA via netbank email and 4 days later have finally received this response -

the only way to make a payment to the ATO via your credit card is via the ATO website. All payments on your credit card to the ATO are treated as a cash equivalent transaction. This means that the amount doesn't earn Commonwealth Awards and the you will be charged a cash advance fee of 1.75% of the amount plus there is no interest free period on cash equivalent transactions.

Please tell me he is wrong because I have made payment already?

PLEASE don't ask them. PLEASE don't draw attention to this practice. PLEASE read all the threads here...where you will find several reports of success with such cards. Sorry to be so blunt but...
