Thanks for the review.

I saw a vlog kf the flight in the other direction, ex MEL, and it was very underwhelming. Food looked pretty average - and I’ll eat anything!

Agree the business class fares to London are extremely competitive, but you’re mainly the flat bed for that. Soft product is lacking.

You can take your own alcohol on board which the crew will serve/supervise. But that only works from an outstation, and beware of LAG rules. You cannot bring alcohol into Brunei even in transit, so any alcohol must be consumed or discarded before arrival.

Have had 2 return trips in J and was told explicitly that staff will not serve any alcohol you bring on board and that it is disrespectful to pour it in their view. Was told you can mix it yourself discretely and then the empty bottles need to be put in a non clear bag and disposed in the rubbish. On our first trip we did buy a few mini bottles at MEL and do this but felt a bit guilty as the staff were friendly and amazing. Obviously can’t do it for the trip home as alcohol is confiscated even on transit. The next trip we didn’t bother at all, had plenty of decent enough non alcoholic beverages on board and food was pretty decent on all legs. Definitely take the stopover package if offered, really enjoyed that.
As a data point funny thing is we both joined up to the FFP for the sake of it and I normally don’t even read my emails from them but by chance the other day I opened one and despite last flying with pre Covid all my points are still active and I almost have enough to book a free flight. Perhaps their points don’t expire?

Alcohol, or the lack thereof, always seems to dominate reviews about this airline. As someone who does not drink on planes, I find it strange that so much focus is spent on it.

We have only flown them on in J their A320Neo from Singapore and return. The plane was clean and comfortable and the staff very pleasant. The meals were very nice - even though they were a bit concerned when we chose spicy dishes. The IFE was ok but movies were obviously, and clumsily, censored such as pixilation of women's legs in slightly revealing costumes. As we were flying on a paid upgrade via a bid we didn't get lounge access. The airport in Bandar Sri Begawan is fine and extremely quick when we used it.

Because… maybe… there isn’t a whole lot else to make up for it in the total product offering? It’s not like they’re serving gourmet cuisine in the main cabin, or caviar upfront. Or have the extensive IFE of say EK. Or the most amazing suites with doors, or even inflight service other airlines talk about®️

It’s kind of just another ‘thing’ which prospective pax should be aware of when making a choice of carrier.
