AWe need to have a decent amount of water as my husband suffers seriously from ear pain and he usually drinks at least one litre of water during descent. Those small glasses of water on the plane just don't help.

As an alternative to drinking water - have you considered earplanes? My wife suffers greatly from ear pain and these little lifesavers work a treat.

If flying international then NO as LAGS rules apply. Domestic in Australia you can carry whatever liquid you like.

Cheers

Timmi

As long as your 'domestic' flight is not JQ35 SYD/MEL or QF8 BNE/SYD as even though these flights are within Australia as they depart/arrive from the international terminals the LAGS screening still applies just as it would if you were flying overseas.

I concur it's probably either an outdated rule or mis-communication, but with the price of Duty Free here I like to believe it's a conspiracy (I took QF30 back from LHR last year and the Duty Free people there made me sign a disclaimer stating that if my alcohol was confiscated in transit they would not be responsible, as they do not allow Australia-bound flights to take DF Alcohol aboard; needless to say, the booze made it home just fine, after being told that we were welcome to leave items in the overhead lockers during transit, something i've done many times).

It would be nice if the powers-that-be of all the airports and respective aviation security agencies actually interacted with each other on a regular basis, and made rules that were coherent and consistent, but that's a utopia ;)

When flying into Australia there are a couple of instances where you don't want to have alcohol purchased at your point of departure eg:

a) QF82 DRW/SYD as alcohol would be confiscated in ADL when you get off aircraft as a transit pax before remaining airside for the onward sector to SYD where you would clear customs.

b) JQ58 SIN/CNS as alcohol would be confiscated in DRW when you get off aircraft as a transit pax before remaining airside for the onward sector to CNS where you would clear customs.

c) JQ82 DPS/DRW but continuing to CNS on JQ58 as a domestic pax as they need to go back through customs as a domestic pax with a D sticker for the DRW/CNS sector so any alcohol purchased on arrival in DRW must go into checked luggage. Pax must clear customs on all intl JQ flights arriving into DRW (except JQ58 ex SIN enroute to CNS).

A friend of mine was told they couldn't purchase alcohol in SIN as they were transiting ADL enroute to MEL. Trouble is, there was nothing the matter with than scenario as pax would be clearing customs in ADL ex QF82 then continuing their journey on a domestic flight QF400 & above.

Anyone been on QF78 HKG/SIN/PER & tried to buy alcohol or would they lose it in the transit stop in SIN?

Perhaps situations above account for some 'lost in translation' moments with the HKG authorities?

This reminds me of a flight I did a couple of years ago where I went AKL-SYD (on AirNZ) and SYD-CBR (on QF).
It took nearly 10 minutes of explaining to the DF counter person in AKL that I could infact carry LAG's on the SYD-CBR sector. It wasn't until I said the words "I accept that you have warned me that I might have this DF confiscated in SYD and I will not hold you responsible in the event that happens" that she agreed to sell me the DF.

Of course there was no problems getting the DF onto the SYD-CBR flight.
So considering there was this level of confusion of what is and isn't allowed at an international airport where a large majority of international flights are to Australia, a "lost in translation" is more than possible at an airport which only has a few flights to AU.

I like to carry water as I needed more than was usually supplied on board, but on my most recent o/s flights (with Qantas) even bottles bought after passing through security had to be emptied before boarding. However, I found that onboard we were offered greater quantities of water than had previously been the case.

I find it easier just to dump any carry on liquids prior to getting anywhere near the departure gate.

When onboard & the crew come through offering bottles I just ask "two please" and they usually hand them over. Once empty I refill at the water fountain near the toilets.

Alcohol I just buy at the port of arrival - I figure the 2~3 dollars I save is more than offset by having to carry it from the previous destination....
