Apple iPad to kill in-flight movies: Jetstar

What like my NAS? :p based on linux and requires looking at the OS to make it do things - like serve media, or FTP or etc. and a consumer product

And What, if it's a Thecus or even most big brand names, it's web-based. It isn't really relevant to what OS it's running in that case.

When it's web based, it's an application that's serving the interface, and the OS is just running the application.

Anyway, this is waaaaay O/T.

It is not a thecus or any big brand name. As I wrote it is a consumer NAS and I have to get under the bonnet to get most things to work

Jetstar to offer iPads in-flight - Hardware - Technology - News - CRN Australia

Two-week trial commences this month.

Jetstar has announced plans to offer iPads to entertain passengers on domestic flights over 90 minutes in length.
In a two-week-long trial that commences later this month, Jetstar will charge passengers $10 to rent an iPad loaded with movies, TV programs, eBooks, music videos, games and CDs.
A Jetstar spokesman told iTnews that the low-cost Qantas subsidiary has been in discussions with Apple since its initial iPad announcement in January.

I used my iPad on QF93 this week. Being a long day flight I used it a lot to watch movies, read a book, play games and review my presentations. It was in use for over 9 hours with the screen brightness down in the mostly dark cabin and of-course all the radios off. Had 11% power remaining at the end and could have charged it at the seat if I needed to.

I don't think battery performance is an issue. I wouldn't carry a spare myself but this is easily achieved for iPads or unibody Macs using an external battery like HyperShop - The Official Online Store for HyperMac + HyperDrive

Cheers,
Steve.

I think Jetstar are shortsighted in thinking that it's only the iPad that will kill IFE onboard. iPods\Phones are already doing a marvellous job of that already. And does it really matter? Isn't it more cost effective for an airline to provide a charging seat jack than an entire entertainment system? Instead of moaning about it, they should be looking for ways that they can accomodate the personal entertainment devices and provide added value there. Lets face it who cares about an AVOD that may or may not work on your flight, outdated movies you don't care about seeing and headsets that fall apart, when you've got a games console, mini-pc and TV all in one anyway? The PED revolution is possibly the most favourable thing to happen to airlines in a long time. Gives them space to now focus on things that really matter to the travelling passenger.

Re: Starclass sale until Sunday Night (Aug 22), eg MEL-SIN $499

Does anyone know how the ipad trial is going? Will they change the on board starclass system to ipads?

I believe the iPad trial has been delayed a few months, iirc it's due to start in September/October this year.

Yep, September is the time frame.

Looks like they had some wrinkles to iron out.

No news on the rollout, but I was sitting in 1A on BNE-HTI last month and read magazines on my iPad. The CSM asked me about it after she sat down for descent, and we had a good chat from there onwards. She was curious about the iPad, as she knew it would be rolling out on JQ, but hadn't actually had JQ ones in-flight yet.
When I asked about in-flight wi fi being rolled out, like in the US, her initial reaction was "Oh god, no" - but I assured her that it was wifi access, not the ability to make calls.

The new JQ inflight menu says the iPad is coming September 1st on selected flights...in the fine print I am sure I read something mentioning domestic only. Surely not the case?
