Apple iPad to kill in-flight movies: Jetstar

You forgot the one fatal flaw. It runs windows ;)

You mean it can run windows amongst other OS's, but lets not go way OT, as an ex Intel employee I am glad we are at least talking Intel CPUs!

To go back to the comparison I made with the R600 vs the air (given we are talking similar profiles/weight to the iPAD):

So you get higher capacity, quicker recharge and the ability to take two batteries for those long flights where there is no AC when compared to the Air, yet you have a laptop lighter than the air with that battery in at 1.1kgs? In the above case non user changable batteries appear to offer nothing other than a slick bottom!

How is 1.1Kgs similar to the .68KG that the iPad weighs at? Also its not great to compare a product designed to be portable and criticise it because it doesnt have weighty accessories that would reduce portability.

Certain products are designed to cater to certain needs and are not for everyone.

Also - is the new A4 chip an Intel chip or an Apple chip?

Air: Capacity 5200mAh Avg Life 5 hrs Recharge Time 10 hours
R600: Capacity 5800mAh Avg Life 6 hrs Recharge Time 4.5 hrs

As you can see, using the Tosh R600 PA3612U-1BRS battery which is the standard in Oz you get a higher capacity, longer use and quicker recharge.

Which MacBook Air are you using? The Rev A models had issues, but they've since been improved significantly. I've seen 2009 models that charged in 4 hours.

FWIW, I'm not sure the Air got the full benefit of the new smart batteries that are on the MacBook Pros, so you're correct in pointing out that the only real advantage is the portability/weight - when I was using one as my primary laptop, that alone made it worthwhile. Having said that, battery life is one of the (less significant) reasons I moved to a MacBook Pro, and is simply no longer an issue for me. :)

I hope they bring in a similar program for the IPAD , the reference to the air is relevant when it comes to the size of the IPDA but the cost of the IPad is much lower, so a throw away is more of a possibility, especially without a battery replacement program.

Edit - I was wrong - they do have an iPhone battery replacement program :) at least.

Yep - USD 79 to replace the iPhone battery, would imagine the iPad battery replacement program would fall somewhere in between that and the USD 199 for the laptops (probably closer to the former).

Going OT, I would have thought battery life issues for portable devices / phones are becoming less significant these days. I get a solid two days out of my iPhone, and never have an issue recharging it in time. Obviously some people will still need to extract every last drop of charge out of their phones/portable devices, but with improving battery technologies and increasingly more convenient charging options (eg USB ports) available, it's not the big deal it once was. :)

Also - is the new A4 chip an Intel chip or an Apple chip?

It's an Apple chip in the sense it was developed by them (through their acquisition of P.A. Semi). From what I've heard, it's an ARM-based chip manufactured by Samsung.

I was talking about the Air and Toshi which were being compared simply because they are ultraportable and fit a similar profile, as they are much closer to the IPad than what the iPAD is to a Kindle (less than half the iPAD weight) by comparison or a 14" notebook, for current available technology in a similar package its a close enough fit + or - 300 grams with 3G.

What criticisim is being levelled about weighty accessories, since when is the battery an accessory for a portable , the reference to Intel is again related back to the Air and Toshi, not the iPAD.

:lol:On JQ or DJ I just take a book-yes one where you have to turn the pages.:lol:

The criticism was that the battery life of the Apple products was poor because you couldnt swap in extra batteries on a long trip like you can with non-apple products.

Perhaps my punctuation was lacking, battery life is poor, and you cannot swap batteries easily when they die or need extra power were my points using exisiting products from Apple versus others as a comparison, it remains to be seen whether an iPAD will have the battery life to last the distance in the context of this thread. I have been to long in the tech industry to make comments on products that are yet to be commercially available.

Fair enough?

I have never taken a spare battery on a trip - in fact when we got new laptops I asked if I could get a reduced weight/life battery as that was the critical issue for me.

@markis10 It is fair to say that sometimes battery life on Apple ads is greater than experienced - but Jobs was particularly bold with the "can last 10 hours whilst playing movies and with wifi running" so we shall wait and see.

There is an elegance to Apple products that is lacking in the windows world and life is not just about functionality - I wear a Tag Heuer, use a Cross pen and write my trip reports in a Moleskein notebook - this could be done with a Bic pen, casio watch and a corporate express pad stolen from the office - but the output is only one facet of my interactions with the product.

Whats elegant about a dead device after 6 hours of use, and who mentioned Windows anyway, you will upset the Linux zealots  .
This discussion is not about OS's regardless, its about a device that requires good battery life, IMHO thats an area Apple have not performed well in for past products, here hoping they have improved.

Seriously - Linux in a consumer product? That is one of the most amusing anti-OSX arguments - that Linux is better than OSX when most people havent even heard of Linux...

Seriously - Linux in a consumer product...

Have a close look at your washing machine or the Garmin Nuvi (and even the router you are using right now to access the net) if you really want to drag a thread off topic, yep, a consumer device based on Linux, but thats not what I am talking about here just to be clear, it was you who introduced the OS debate :), Apple have sucked when it comes to battery life in the past and thats the issue I have.

As Mr Dyson would say, Jetstar is not particularly doing a good job, probably because they outsourced the show, with CPA + profit share.
CPA is continious partial attention - much like some project sponsors.

Gizmos: Compal Android tablet with next-gen Tegra demoed at CES (video) -- Engadget

Broadly the next gen 'smartbooks' will do you a full on 14 hours at 1/3 weight of a netbook - but not run windows. These are really jumped up mobile phones. At the moment Android OS and Win Mobile whatever are not up to par, and the iTablet mediocre. Give it 6 months...

Maybe I am just cantankerous late at night
I just want to go back to the above-quoted post. I've not heard the word cantankerous used in years, last heard on Martin/Molloy's drivetime program to describe John Laws.

Seriously - Linux in a consumer product? That is one of the most amusing anti-OSX arguments - that Linux is better than OSX when most people havent even heard of Linux...

Considering OS X is based on a MACH Kernel and is only really a heavily modified version of BSD, it's got it's *nix roots. It's just got the GUI that is still, unfortunately, lacking the coherence, finesse and polish of KDE/GNOME/<insert window manager of choice>.

But this is not an OS war, merely pointing out that OS X is, at heart, all *nix ;)

H it was you who introduced the OS debate :), Apple have sucked when it comes to battery life in the past and thats the issue I have.

I just think its a bit rich to cherry pick the battery issue when its part of a total product option.

@drewbles and markis10 re the OS question - you know what I meant about Linux vs OSX in consumer devices - I was referring to personal computing consumer devices - things where people see the OS rather than things where the OS is invisible...

What like my NAS? :p based on linux and requires looking at the OS to make it do things - like serve media, or FTP or etc. and a consumer product
