Apple iPad to kill in-flight movies: Jetstar

Skeptical myself....

Jetstar chief information officer (CIO) Stephen Tame believes Apple's iPad tablet may end airlines providing in-flight movies and television to stave off boredom.

Speaking to ZDNet.com.au, Tame said the tablet "may lead in the future the end of airline in-flight entertainment systems".

I think the difference is that the iPod usre group who don't have laptops will pull out their iPads. they will be useable for a full flight up to Asia without recharging and will be controllable by the users (no PA interruptions). Also the iPad will be less of a space hog than a laptop.

What would be more intersting would be for the airlines like JQ to rent out the iPads instead of DVD players to starclass pax...

So they think more customers of their airline are likely to purchase a AU$500+ device while still buying cheap airfares with them? Seems more like customers flying JQ wouldn’t be spending much on digital devices.

I agree with docjames.

Also to simongr, I’m OK with the name, I’m just not sure I’d use the iPad for the main thing it’s designed for, reading e-books. If Apple releases NG subscriptions on it, and newspaper subscriptions, maybe.

As I already carry a MacBook Pro and and iPhone on every flight (and enjoy movies on both), I really don't see the need to add an iPad to the collection, unless I find one ultra-cheap on my upcoming States trip.

My thoughts exactly. Although they could be flying JQ on cheap airfares, simply because they spend too much on buying digital and every other device under the sun.

Well yes and no. Generally we get two types of interruptions to IFE:

- Welcome from the pilot - frankly I personally don't need this and it doesn't add anything to safety

- FA announcements about turbulence: again a bit unnecessary as my first indication of turbulence is the rattling of the ice in my G&T followed by the very helpful seatbelt sign going on. I personally don't need my movie interrupted to tell other people to sit down.

The main safety briefings are of course fine.

But then again, as 'electronic devices' they wouldn't be usable during taxi, takeoff and descent, would they?

I usually travel with a fully content-loaded iPhone and laptop - and find I rarely use them, especially if the IFE is up to scratch (eg QF, Studio CX, Krisworld). I'd definitely use the iPad while commuting or on the couch, but I'd much rather the variety present on a well-selected IFE - half the fun is finding things you like that you wouldn't necessarily watch at home.

Yeah, cause everyone who can afford a $499USD (plus tax) for the base model will be flying JQ.

C'mon Jetstar. Get a clue here. You're aiming at the discount LCC market, not the people-with-cash-to-buy-new-gadgets market.

My Macbook Pro and iPhone go everywhere with me too, but the only time i'll be caught on JQ is doing an F Lounge run

Have yet to have the pleasure (?) of flying Deathstar - may consider if taking the tribe on holiday and there is a MAJOR $ saving vs QF, but no way otherwise.
As you well know, the IFE offerings on QF Dom (even in J most of the time) is not much better!

I think it's a little narrow minded to think that JQ PAX are poor and therefore cannot afford any gadgets!

I fly the MEL-BKK special all the time with JQ because for the money it's great value (less than $500 return). I always use my notebook or iphone for IFE...even when I have flown Starclass I refuse the IFE unit because it is total cough and looks like it was made by Rank Arena in 1978.

As someone else posted the comment from JQ reads to me as 'now we can get rid of the IDE units and blame Apple'.

mmmm interesting.
Cant say i use IFE on the LCCs.
But do not agree with the statement that Ipad whatevers will kill it.
What about people like myself or grandma macy who will never have these things and simply want a quick fix of entertainment.
As for killing IFE on non LCCs : CX hahahaahhaa no way! best IFE ever. SQ well apple has a long way to go. QF nope. AA, UA, MU yeh, maybe...
