We definitely need a dedicated thread for the biggest sporting event in Australia each year.

No idea what court temp is right now and nowhere near a TV but Lleyton certainly in a dire fight in his 1st round match against Andreas Seppi.

Update: Lleyton just squared it up at 2 sets ea - what a sensation he is.

Whose Seppi, and why was he trailing to him in the first place???

With Australian tennis so pathetic over the last decade or so its hard to get excited about it...

Let's hope Tomic can pull his head out of a certain orifice...

So continuing on the positive tone of previous poster who else is heading to the tennis over next 2 weeks?

I will be there Sat night, next Tue night and both finals nights - might sneak in 1 or 2 other visits as well.

Bit far from Perth, but enjoy and I will try to be more positive in the future... ;)

I'm going tomorrow night, and hoping not to melt.

Hewitt just went out, but much as I admire his spirit, I didn't expect anything else.

I'm working at the tennis for the next two weeks. so here every night..

It was that hot on court yesterday I know at least 2 photographers who's cameras stopped working on match point because they overheated! had an iPad shut down for the same reason.

Also a few burns from lenses as the metal gets incredibly hot.. It isn't pleasant to be a photographer in this weather!

I'm going Sunday and next Wednesday
My friends have a family ground pass going begging for today ( or was last night)
No one seems tb too keen
I know there's an extreme heat rule, but what on earth has to happen for them to invoke it?

It's temperature and humidity related. There was a couple of press releases issued about the heat yesterday. They will only close the roof in extreme conditions as the tournament is an Open, i.e. outdoors. So closing the roof changes the conditions. I'll see if i can find the heat rule formula.

EDIT: link to the extreme heat formula: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Open_extreme_heat_policy

it wasn't enacted yesterday due to the low humidity.

Whilst I agree the tournament has an 'outdoor' history, and for that reason they will not close the roof unless they absolutely have to, my understanding of the concept of Open and Closed tournaments is eligibility to play: eg. The Australian Closed (I don't even know if tennis has one but other sports do) is only open to Australian citizens, while The Australian Open is open to all players. Tennis may be different I guess.

Also means open to professionals and amateurs.. Around 1967 or so the rules changed..

I heard this morning the wet bulb temperature isn't part of the equation anymore, rather a guide. The policy was enacted today and there are no matches being played on the outside courts at the moment.. I don't think play will resume until tonight, so it could be a late one for many!

Just arrived in Melbourne for the tennis (from Sydney) this weekend.

Part of me feels for the players who struggle in the extreme heat, but the majority of me thinks fair game, survival of the fittest and mentally tough.

Federer and Hewitt never complain about the temperature.. they just prepare for it.. it's going to be interesting tomorrow..

I am working each evening outside the tennis venue on Olympic Boulevard for most of this week. It is hot. We are doing 30 mins of traffic control and then fifteen minute break to sit in air cond. vehicle. And drinking litres of water.

I feel for you.. In long pants too I'm guessing plus high vis vest!

I just left for the night, it's still about 30 but it feels cool! Lol!!
