I am nearing my 12 months; i am working out if it is worthwhile paying the full $425 for an extra 40K. Calculations show it is poor value compared to taking another card.
If the anniversary points are only the cost of the annual fee, rather than another $x amount of spending (usually $3-4k), then I'd say it's a good deal.
What sort of calculations are you referring to otherwise? If you opt for another card, you'd have to spend thousands more to get x amount of points.
ie. Let's say you're looking to get a new card instead of paying an anniversary annual fee - a Westpac Qantas Altitude Black card.
The Westpac Qantas Altitude Black card awards 90k points after a $6k spend and $370 annual fee ($295 annual fee + $75 Qantas rewards fee).
The "cost" of those 90k points is then $0.071/pt.
For 40k points for the cost of the $425 annual fee for the ANZ FF Black card, it's $0.011/pt.
Buying 40k points is currently $1,155 but for the cost of an annual fee of $425, I'd keep the card.
Even if you buy from Qantas Wine and get bonus points, you'd have to spend a lot more than $425 to get 40k bonus points.
Having the alcohol as "an extra" doesn't really cut it (despite a lot of posters thinking otherwise), unless you're a drinker and / or will be gifting that alcohol.
The only thing that I'd toss up on is that due to the longer blackout periods (now usually 24 months), would I want to hold onto a card for that long, or cancel ASAP to shorten the blackout periods.
For me, if the cost of the anniversary points is the annual fee only, I'd keep it. If it was spending another $3-4k in year 2, I'd rather cancel and sign-up for another card.
