Ummm...did we just get another "enhancement". New Awards comparison page here Frequent Flyer - Using Points - Qantas & Partner Classic Awards - Classic Award Bookings lists the following in the T&Cs at the bottom:

∞ Flight Upgrade Awards are not available on Classic Awards or on international airfares booked in E, N, O, P, Q, U, X or Z class, which includes some Qantas Any Seat Awards and some international Red e-Deal fares.

I'm sure I have upgraded "Z" booked as ASAs in the past.

Re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26] was 10Apri

On the Any Seat Award page it says the following (U and Z conspicuously absent):

"Flight upgrades are not available on Classic Awards or international airfares booked in E, N, O, P, Q, or X class (such classes may include Any Seat Awards and international Red e-Deal fares)"

Certainly referring to Classic awards and 'restricted economy" for booking class reference as I'm not really sure how to upgrade from P ... :p

Words to the above effect have certainly been knocking around for ages in respect of classic awards...but I am sure only "X" was previously mentioned in the context of classic award buckets booked as MASAs. In fairness, it does say "some" so maybe they have just tried to put too much in one line and we're all worrying for nada...

Anyone got any MASAs booked in "Z" or "U" that they can try to "upgrade" as a test?

I have a flight upgrade request lodged for a JASA, this was done via the call centre as not able to be done online.
I certainly hope this is not a change to the program and is a mistake as the T&C's haven't been updated to state that X and U class Any Seat awards are not eligible for upgrades :(

The wording cited by the OP has been changed to

Flight Upgrade Awards are not available on Classic Awards or on international airfares booked in E, N, O, Q, or X Class , which includes some Qantas Any Seat Awards and some international Red e-Deal fares.

At least operational upgrades are still available to passengers with Q class bookings - even when booked on the AA codeshare flight number :)

Phew...looks as if someone just over-zealously (and slavishly) copied from another section of the website. At least someome was monitoring the forum and made the necessary changes!
