Any Affordable Travel Insurance that Includes Missed Connection?

Hi guys, I'm new here. I have an upcoming flight on 15 Feb with the following itinerary:

MNL to SIN with SQ | 0735 to 1120
SIN to PER with QF | 1915 to 0030 +1

I have a self-transfer flight and I know that I have enough time to do it but for some reason I fear that my MNL to SIN might be delayed or cancelled due to the things going on in the Philippines now (nCoV, typhoons, and possible eruption of nearby volcano) so I am thinking of getting a travel insurance that can cover if I miss the connecting flight with QF.

Do you guys know of any affordable travel insurance that covers such? Thanks

I think there are only a couple of insurers that will cover a missed connection due to late inbound, or other unforeseen events - one of them is Insure4less and I think World Nomads might be another.

Just about all comprehensive policies will cover missed connections, but usually with a restriction that you must be on your way to an event that cannot proceed without you (for example you are the keynote speaker, or your wedding, etc).

The two I mentioned are more generous and will cover missed connections due to inbound delays or cancellations of your inbound carrier.

With Insure4less - at least when we took out the policy a couple years ago - the condition was that you must plan to arrive at the connection point in advance of the earliest check-in time stated for the connecting flight. So if check-in opens three hours prior to departure, you had to have planned to arrive 3+ hours before.

Check the current PDF.

Your itinerary would certainly be within the ball park.

Insure4less is pretty competitive in terms of pricing IIRC.

Thanks for information, MEL_Traveller. I have looked at Insure4Less and I saw that they provide a great cover for missed connection. However, they also require you to have lived in Australia for the previous 3 months which is not applicable to me. I'm gonna look at World Nomads now and see if they have the same cover. I have looked into this too, but it depends on what exactly you want cover for? You havent really said.

In this scenario, you can be reasonable confident that QF will be accomadating to reschedule you onto next available flight at no cost to you should SQ be delayed, provided you inform them before check in closes.

As for lost hotel bookings or flights, Travel insurance would normally cover those under "events beyond your control"

Some but not all Insurances cover the risk of "getting to an event on time" like a wedding,sports event etc", but thats only to cover the costs of getting there in time. If you cant get there in time, then you dont have a claim.

  • You are covered for certain additional travel and accommodation expenses should you be forced to move from your pre-booked accommodation as the result of specified catastrophes (e.g. flood, tsunami or medical epidemic).

The following explanation of Missed departure. I could have used this once when the train to Schiphol was cancelled due to a tree on the line. Fortunately a call to a friend sorted it with a ride. I say fortunately because his wife had his car and he had to borrow a car from a neighbour.

Thanks guys, I've looked into it and yeah I think it provides a good cover for my situation. Next time I would just probably get connecting flights of the same itinerary to avoid worrying for these things.

Update from Columbus regards Coronavirus and their cover. If you took out your cover prior to 31 Jan 2020 you would have received cover, but not after this date. There are some other caveats too such as remaining instead of leaving the country where DFAT Level 4 advice has been given.

Update from Columbus regards Coronavirus and their cover. If you took out your cover prior to 31 Jan 2020 you would have received cover, but not after this date. There are some other caveats too such as remaining instead of leaving the country where DFAT Level 4 advice has been given.

Indeed... as far as the medical component. But as for ‘missed connections’, that need to be due to a defined event, which is a delay in the inbound public transport.
