Hey there, getting very excited about my upcoming trip with my girlfriend to Sth America and the World Cup!
We are flying out from Sydney to Santiago - and my father has given me 2 Qantas First Lounge Passes - extremely excited about this. It's one hell of a way to start our trip. As my girlfriend and I are relatively young (28) and travelling in economy, we both want to be comfortable for the flight to Santiago, I am just slightly worried about the dress code for the first lounge.

I had a read over the previous thread from 2011 (I can't post a link because I haven't posted over 10 times on this forum)

And opinions differ quite alot between users. I was wondering if opinions have changed since 2011.

Obviously we are not going to look like bums (no rips in our jeans etc) but I was wondering what your thoughts are about wearing thongs? Will this be frowned upon? I don't want to upset anybody - or worse, be denied access.

Cheers

I would expect you to be denied - closed toe shoes should be a pre-requisite. If you need to wear thongs, then have them in your carry-on for the plane

I prefer boxers but each to their own. (Yes I know it's TMI but the OP asked!)

I've worn shorts in the F lounge with no problems, but then they did know who I was. ;)

Follow after 7 pub rules and you'll be fine... Basically if you think they will let you into your local RSL in what you are wearing after 7pm, then it will be fine for the lounges...
Long gone are the days where people would fly in their Sunday best...

Wearing thongs on an aeroplane is so Australian unfortunately, and I cringe every time I see this. esp. OS. Not to mention the safety issues as well...

Don't wear thongs. Its not too hard to have spare "plane clothes" in your bag.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I realize that the QC is not the Flounge, but the following applies there:

10.7 Smart, casual dress standards apply at all times. Individual lounge managers will have discretion to administer these standards as they reasonably deem appropriate in the circumstances.

I wouldn't think thongs fit into this category.

Pith helmet and hacking jacket for Pims, no less!!

Regards,

BD

Definite 'no' to thongs. Although I'd have no qualms about wearing shorts I never have simply because I prefer wearing slacks when I am flying.

I *have* witnessed someone in MEL F wearing shorts (more like swimming trunks really), thongs and some questionable tattoos. Probably a Collingwood supporter though.

According to the latest enhancements...
"17.4.1 Qantas will refuse entry to any First Class Lounge any person who is not
a) a Platinum 1 member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program;
b) Flying First Class on a Qantas ticketed flight;
c) Not dressed in a white tuxedo with matching coughmerbund and a red rose in the left breast pocket, or, if female, a ball gown with matching tiara and necklace."

So I think things are out of the question.

I have been into SYD and MEL F lounges in shorts on numerous occasions, and shall do again this weekend - though not wearing thongs. I think the only time I've worn shorts with thongs before an international flight was years ago in the MEL J lounge, where I received a friendly greeting on entry (as usual).

Why would you want to wear thongs.?(the footwear variety I assume) And most definitely not the Borat Thong !!!!
Ever had your toes trodden on, gum caught between or under your toes, slip and slide should you need to walk across a wet tarmac ?
Surely you do posses shoes ?
I think the on board sox are still provided by some airlines for business and first class pax along with eye shades.
I prefer to change into track suit pants on board for a long haul. ( I would love the pyjamas from QF First, but that is never going to happen to me), but if it is summer, I usually wear shorts into the airport or lounge and have never had a problem.
After all unless you are a bogan, you know what is the right thing to do surely?

I was once in the old F lounge in SYD around 2004 or before and (sir now but not then) Peter Jackson was walking around in shorts and no shoes and I thought it looked very poor.

Was anyone ever thrown out of the F lounge for wearing a singlet, shorts and thongs?
It looks like there is no dress code whatsoever.

Lets get back to the good old days. Sunday best clothing should be the minimum requirement for travel.

Why would anyone want to wear thongs anywhere away from the beach? Socks and shoes are not going to hurt anyone.

I don't care how over the top it sounds, I still ALWAYS wear a collar to fly. No exceptions. It's just civilised.

On long haul I take something more comfortable to change into once in the air.

As for the lounge, you will feel out of place in thongs, and the staff probably won't be overly friendly. Do yourself (and your neighbours on the plane) a favour and wear closed shoes. Enjoy the lounge!

I don't care what people wear in the lounge or on the plane, just keep the noise down and I am a happy flyer.

And and yes I have worn thongs into the SYD F Lounge. I minded my own business, sat down at the restaurant quietly, ordered my meal, had a drink and off I went to my gate when boarding was due. No one would have spotted or noticed me being there except anyone who judge 'thong wearers' as evil.

Looks like it's going to be another "lounge dress code" debate, followed by "why QF doesn't open a Dom J lounge in PER/ADL" :)
