AFL family members not allowed into South Australia

Six Victorian family members of Port Adelaide footballers have had exemptions to travel to South Australia revoked.

They were among 11 family members who were travelling to the state ahead of the AFL finals.

Five have already arrived and are in hotel quarantine.

They will be allowed to stay.

South Australia's Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier overruled a decision to grant them exemptions, saying special treatment should be reserved for compassionate grounds, such as people visiting dying relatives or attending funerals.

South Australia currently has a hard border with Victoria, which prevents even South Australians returning home unless they are considered essential travellers.

Good to see, footy shouldn't be more important than residents who have been denied the right to return home.

Again, please can we have Dr Spurrier call Dr Young and explain compassionate exemptions along with border restrictions 😂

And yet WA won't even let its own residents return, even if they quarantine. See that's what makes me angry.
I thought that travel into WA from other states was permitted but that hotel quarantine was mandatory (unless you own Seven West Media)?

Edit: I see that an exemption must still be granted and is generally limited to essential travellers. That's plenty to get angry about.

Apparently their application for exemption was approved by an individual and not the usual committee. The ones who managed to get in are staying in a self paid Hotel which likely means they won't see the match anyway as their 14 days may not be up before the match. And they will be watched carefully to make sure of that.

Another example of a reasonable compassionate exemption program.
A 98 year old wanted either of her sons to look after her.both willing but denied in last few weeks.Came to hospital,a letter written so the son from QLD is on his way and allowed to serve his quarantine in her home.
Son from Melbourne still denied.
Of course the border really should be open to QLD anyway.

Spurrier is the main reason why our border to NSW wasn’t opened earlier and if she had the final say it probably wouldn’t be opening tonight

So, more detail about the exemptions yesterday for Port player families from Victoria to get an exemption so they could watch their sons afl final. It seems that the person who pushed it through wasn't even a Health person but a high flyer in the Tourism sector but whom, most notably, is a very well known Port Adelaide supporter if not even an officlal rep. She is the sister of Rodger Rasheed (former tennis coach of Lleyton Hewitt and his then tennis player fiancée). She is always in the media spotlight when it comes to tourism. Because of course watching footy is more important than the health exemptions that have been refused. At least the CMO when notified, squashed it immediately. Shame that five got away with it and of course it gives them free passage to the Grand Final in Brisbane if they get that far.

Prof Spurrier does get some things very right.

Cant blame them for trying, after all in QLD anyone with some $, celebrity or public profile gets waved through with smiles by Dr Young and receives a fruit platter in their exemption accomodation

They probably thought they would get the same easy treatment!

I think that's a little harsh.

True, they didn't get fruit platters (well we don't know for sure but probably not). But they did get special access to the pool and the bar 😂
Well I'm fine with that to a certain degree. Just as has happened in other states except Qld has better fruit.

Without concessions there'd be no footy and what would Australians do if they can't watch footy?

I don't like the rich people who drove their expensive boat up from Victoria being allowed to stay however.

Qld's border controls are/were very similar to SA and WA.

Adelaide Crows are probably hoping that this flies under the radar:

"They feel like they've let the club down, let their teammates down, the members and supporters, which they have” (after being caught, that is)

Edited

Oh no. It’s headlines here. Crouch is a free agent and playing the field trying to get a good contract. The other guy is already up on a drink driving charge. Seriously? What were they thinking.
