I nearly just blew my foofu valve when I heard on ABC radio that a NZ Rugby League team was expecting to get an exemption from the travel ban on non-Australian citizens so that they can come to Australia for the "vital" reason of playing footy. It makes me really angry to think that this might be allowed when many other people are not able to come here eg my son's British girlfriend. I can guarantee you that she would not be off camping with the brothers, shooting at things without a licence, riding a motor bike in contravention of social distancing and travel limitations or drinking and dancing with a posse of hot young guys.
I cannot believe that this is even being considered. Probably this is more like a rant than a post, but really, why should the rules be bent for football players (expecting to be flamed for saying this!)

How about we allow all of them go to NZ instead and they stay there long term.

AU would be a lot better off, improved crime rates, reduced family violence, improved TV viewing, and average increase in Australia's IQ., ;)

The plaintiff(s) would be arguing that they provide a public service..vis.. entertaining the multitudes during their confinement .
This argument may have some relevance in codes that have a record of good internal self discipline.
The Ifalldowngetupfalldownget… sport has a dreadful player behaviour record that is mostly hidden behind the newscorp money barrier.
I am with the op in post #1.. they ifdgufdgu… mob don't deserve a "special dispensation" with a primary intent to prop up the news corp investment .

Not the same code but really pee'd of at the primadonna's drama and crying unfair when their salaries would be reduced to $500K per person for sitting at home for 6 months while 10,000's queuing up outside centrelink wondering if they could afford to buy food for their kids next week.

Average AFL salary is $300000, but they don't want to be separated from their loved ones for a month in a hub. Pretty poor form.

I agree in full, but there's the underlying factor of tv & gambling revenue ie $'s. The codes and of course the state governments get a take/tax from those, of which some goes to the players under their pay agreements. IMHO I think having the players on the fields are just the means to that end. You could compare it to horse racing that has continued unabated, although minus the crowds.

Fixed typo to clarify. I'm an NZer so rugby is more my game, league is Aussies'. Even if you aren't one of the fans. 😲
Really almost enjoy Rugby Union 🤭😂. Rugby League well, not an Aussie game but something that a couple of eastern states dreamt up during some kind of meltdown! <waiting for the furore to erupt> 😂

And then there is the huge cast of coaching personnel that each club carries. Ridiculous. Watching some of the older games, there were probably two or three coaches, trainers etc. Its insane the number they have now.

An "industry" diverting millions of dollars that produces no material outcome worthwhile to society. YMMV. Not much different to pokies in my book.

I disagree too. But discussions would have been held with government and my guess is that time is when government expects relaxed social distancing. Unlike a cafe reopening elite sport does require a longer lead in time. But I also agree a post above an idiot will break the quarantine rules andthey will be back to square one.
